Your points are good, but some people join these forums simply to learn or have interesting discussions, not to win a debate. When someone is clearly wrong but goes with your "STOMP ON THEM!" strategy, I walk away from the thread (not the forum). I was never any good in debate class.
You are right about people coming on the forum to ask valid questions and gain information.
For someone that is clearly wrong, in order for them to attempt a STOMP, they need to have the skills which are needed to accomplish it. Otherwise, the more experienced communicators on the forum are going to rip them to shreds. (such as myself)
Obviously for someone to get empassioned over something relatively trivial reflects on that persons lack of understanding about what is a debatable topic or not. Otherwise, it is just hot air that accomplishes nothing.
If someone doesn't agree with ones opinion, isn't necessarily the reason for a serious debate, as everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
BUT, if someone is trying to pass something off as FACT, that leaves the door wide open for people to attack them, finding flaws with their arguments, or citing facts that counter their argument.
Facts, or for a better term...the TRUTH, can be quite controversial, and quite devastating, but nothing can stop it from being a fact, and therefore, impossible to defeat.
People need to learn how to choose their topics, so that they have a great chance to defend their position.
If they go and argue about everything, or take a position against their forum arch enemy/nemesis, while quite entertaining, can leave them open to repeating mistakes and subsequently being thwarted.
Plus, it can get a little bit redundant and takes up space that would be better filled up with useful information.
and if one loses and argument, BIG DEAL/SO WHAT. Turn off the computer and go get a beer.
Your not gonna see me fuming on my own time because i got chopped up in a debate. They need to learn to let it go, and learn from it.
