Using a jump cue playing 1P or Straight Pool

This was part of a earlier thread dealing with problems I had with the new Predator Air, thanks to JoeyA and WGCP, I have corrected the problem.

Question though for anyone that plays 1P and straight pool- Do any of you players EVER use your jump cues in these two games and if so, what percentage? The reason I ask is because I do on RARE occasion.

jumping is a poke and hope shot under the best of circumstances..

1P and 14.1 are built around precision cueball control..... thats the game.... if you let your cueball get so far away from you that you have to resort to poke and hope.. you have already lost...

As already stated, jump cues are illegal to use in 1-pocket, but I will gladly allow my opponent to use one. I play a guy that will use one sometimes, and it rarely works out very well for him:D

ABall, I knew it was illegal in tournament play but just wondering if anyone ever did it in a non-tournament match. I have used it, but very, very rarely. Thanks for the reply. little bubba

leave those 2 games for what they are meant to be played. precision cueball control and not an exhibition of jumping skill. we had enough of those jump sticks being used in other games. leave the 14.1 and 1P games alone.

I'm against the use of these things since it's obvious that it is detrimental on the development of a player's overall skill and table knowledge. people want the easy way out (straight path to hitting a ball). for christ's sake, develop your game properly.

sorry, if I appear to be upset about it. well, I do. anyway, goodluck and have fun ! just don't rely too much on your jump cue.

softshot, I was thinking mainly in terms of getting out of a trap your opponent left you. The only time I can recently remember doing it was when my opponent left a ball deep in his pocket playing 1P, he had two other balls tied up about two diamonds up table, he protected the ball in the pocket with the two other balls. Cue ball about a foot from the tied up balls, I jump and made the ball in his pocket and stuck the cue ball in it's place. I only needed one, and he needed all three. Thanks for the reply. little bubba

HM Shot, thanks for the reply, I don't use it very often at all, I could only remember one recent situation that I used it (posted in a reply to softshot)
In this particular game, I felt my chances were better pocketing his ball without foul than kicking at it although this kick would have been a high percentage shot also. little bubba

look man... here is how I see it...

One hour of kicking practice is worth 5 hours of jumping practice...AND you control the cueball..

jumping is an easy out for bad pool players with too much money..

Your right, and I will probably become a better player if I just put the jump cue down and learned to kick better than I do! Thanks

Hmmm.... I guess you need to learn some forms of 1P strategies. 1P is a game of imagination or creativity (not jumping but more like chess puzzles of where to put the pieces. in pool that would be the CB and OBs). the best 1P players, even take intentional fouls or bunts and pocketing in the opponent's corner. I'm sure it would be very helpful if you had some copies of DCC 1P matches. you will see a lot of strategies and creative ideas of doing a shot which you think would only be possible to make or hit with the help of a jump cue.

HM Shot, thanks for the replies and the advice. I have many dvds and Eddie Robins books, I just wondered if any of the players on this forum EVER found themselves in even one situation where they needed to use the jump cue. You are right, no matter how I study this wonderful game of 1P, it will never be enough! Thanks again

I have a video from the 2000 "catfish classic" and Keith McCready jumps THE OBJECT BALL over a blocker from down table and spears it into the heart of the pocket!:D too cool!....but he lost the match to Cecil Tugwell.

I jump occasionally in 1P/14.1, but only with a full cue.

so much hate for jumping???? I jump once in a while as well, and I tell you what, when I do jump it is a very high percentage shot, I have gotten out starting with a jump shot that pocketed a ball(bank shot or bank a ball away from the opposing players pocket), I say if you are allowed to use it and you know how, why not if you can pull it off at a high percentage? I for one am tired of players complaining about the jump shot when its a legal shot in 9 ball or 8 ball, usually it happens to be someone that cant jump. and if your oppenent will let you in 1p, why not?

and usually the one who jumps happens to be someone who can't kick. ok, to make good use of the jump cue, let's invent a new game. let's say jump pool. where you need to jump the CB everytime you shoot. very nice ! atleast we can now justify it's use. fair enough I guess !

I think that if its not allowed in Tournament play then you obviously cant use it. But if you are gambling why not be allowed to use it? It isnt very often that you would need one it just makes for an extra weapon in the arsenal. And for the guy who said jumping is a poke and hope? HMMM, he must not know how to jump, because when I jump its almost always gauranteed....you have to know your limits obviously.

My full time playing cue, is a Rick Howard jump break cue, it plays very very well, I never break it down to jump though, only use it to break and play with I have a seperate short jump cue that I used to hate until I learned HOW to use it, NOW it has gotten me out of many situations, I also know HOW to kick at balls one, two and three rails, using the diamonds but sometimes it is just as safe if not easier to jump at a ball than kick at it......

Just my Opinion, I think the biggest thing that should be RULED OUT in pool nowdays is the BALL IN HAND RULE. It makes it to easy for a retard to get out. BALL IN HAND behind the head string would be better more skill and strategy involved in that one, of course I am talking about nine ball and eight ball, because one pocket is already behind the line, can you imagine what would happen if you got ball in hand anywhere on the table in one pocket:eek:

Is it illegal to jump in 1P or just a jump cue is illegal? In the example above a full cue is used. Sometimes jump shots are absolute hangers and can be executed with your playing cue. Example: if you only have to jump an edge of a ball and the object ball is sitting in a pocket. Why wouldn't this shot be an option?

I think it's legal to jump in 14.1 AND 1pocket, but just not using the short cue. I never had anyone call a foul for it....?

exactly the point I was referring to. the point of a safe is to punish your opponent and not to give him an easy way out. where the legalization of jumps nullified or lessened the effectivity of containing your opponent. as you mentioned, it's easier and safer compared to kicking.

same reason why BIH is crap. why would you let your opponent get out easily becoz of that rule? they should be punished rather than rewarded, right? they should earn it the hard way, right?
