Using the side pocket point for position

I was experimenting with this the other day, found out that I could do it fairly consistently without scratching, as long as the cueball and ob werent too far from the side pocket on this shot. This is a shot where it's difficult to get up table because you are almost straight in, and obstructing balls prevent you from doing other options. If you can follow the cueball into the point accurately, rest assured it will go in the GENERAL direction of up table, but I would have to say it's impossible to guess what exact line the cueball would follow. Here is an example:

CueTable Help

I scratched about 2 out of 10 times. If I really focus on my alignment, I can hit the point most of the time hitting the cueball with a firm follow stroke.

That's it, you are getting a bad rep for this one!;)

No way you could put enough follow on that ball to get down there. End of story.

I'd try this; I think it's at least as realistic as getting good shape off the point:

CueTable Help

I'd elevate maybe 30-35 degrees and use a lot of low right spin, medium speed. The CB pockets the 5, hits the 9, and then the right masse and draw take over.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to cuetechasaurus again.

I think the safety is best if you're unsure of getting to the 6. Hiding the OB behind the cluster and the cue snug on the rail by the 6 ball would be the correct shot. Yes?

START(

%[r4M2%\d2D0%]b6D2%^\1G2
)END

IMO, using the points for position is just not worth it to sell out the game.

Me too. You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to cuetechasaurus again.

Playing off a point is very risky. The difference from one table to the next would make it impossible to reliably get the same shape.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't you want to come off three rails for this one?

Looks like the 9 is in the way to run it up 3 rails.. Plus your going to end up shortside at best.

I think I'd just draw it straight back to the other side of the table and take a little harder shot on the 6. Or play a safe on the 6 if I wasn't feeling comfortable with it.

playing position off the point is not the right shot in the example....it is good to be creative...but this isn't a good example...either power stroke draw it back or play the safe on the six.....

I just placed those other balls there to emphasize that there really isn't any other ways to get on the next ball, i.e. going around the table, power draw below the side with low right, etc. This wasn't an actual in game situation, I was just experimenting. the cueball and 5 ball were a bit further from the side pocket (wasn't trying to make an accurate diagram, just a general concept), and I wasn't jacked up over a ball. But yes I could get the cueball to the other side of the table hitting it hard.
