Randy you should find out what Ryan is charging and do not undercut those prices. At least if you respect that issue this will not escalate.

I intended on charging the samething, I think it will be fun. I'm fairly good at what I do, I still have a problem with getting all the chaulk off the shaft. My tips, and ferrule are good, shaft cleaning is ok. I've been working on getting that blue tint out but it seems that no matter what I do its still there. I could sand it off but, I play pool and I dont like when my shaft gets smaller. I've get a lot of grief because of that. You know all the shaft jokes, tip jokes. You only charge $10 to clean my shaft wow your cheaper than my wife.

I know Ryans a pro, and I wish a could learn a few things from him. It would be a great experience for me to learn from the best. The cue building thing I am just getting started and I have lots of questions.

Most of the time people want to take their stick to Ryan but it sometimes takes a week or so for him to get it done, I offer to do it that day its an easy in for me. I've been doing it for a while and the customers are growing every week.

I was in construction for a little over 15 years, I've done finish carpentry, for a number of years. Finishing a Cue doesnt seem to be that far off, other than its long and straight.

I didn't even have to buy tickets for this circus! Be careful who you piss off my friend, karma has a nasty way of paying you back. One thing that I have learned is to never bite the hand that feeds you. Hope it works out for all of you.
 
I can't offer much in a cue maker's view because I am not one. However, I do believe in fair play and putting in your dues. I have known Ryan for a while now and if I needed a repair, I would look him up because he is the man for the job. He has proved this by his past repairs, and a growing list of customers in need.

It looks as if you are burning bridges behind you that you may one day need to cross over. Maybe it is not the fact that you are wanting to do this but the manner you choose to go about it. Take a look around and read the above posts, they are saying something far more important than the words written there.......

Screw up a guys shaft and you get to make or buy him another.

Finishing a cue is the same as finish carpentry? You're charging the same as Ryan, who seems to have the Lazarus touch on cues? You're the same guy who needs to ask how to make threads for a screw, how to make V-groove and butterfly points. This has been hilarious. Thank you.

YOUR PASSION FOR CUES, MAKES YOU THE BEST "MECHANIC" IN THE BUSINESS.

IT SUCKS THAT HE ASKS FOR HELP, BUT CLAIMS TO DO WORK LIKE YOU DO. IT'S ACTUALLY SAD, BUT SOME PEOPLE NEED TO LIVE AND LEARN. I'M SURE THE PEOPLE AT THE TOURNIES WILL LOOK FOR YOU TO DO ALL THEIR WORK.

I must really be missing something, to finish a cue to have that high shine and deep finish you more coats of poly on it and for me I use steel wool (or you can sand it) the more scratches the deeper the finish, just like when you finish furniture, cabinets, and/or tables. Then when you've reach your desired deepth, your then will need to wetsand it to make sure you have all the little bumps out of it. I suppose if you wanted to you could also wet sand between coats. Theres really no rocket science to it.

all in all I have done about 80 repairs in the past few months, between the local pool rooms, and one tournament, and I've only had one person come back, and that was because she asked for a hard tip, I put one on she didnt like because it didnt hold the chaulk.

So for my quality of workmanship I think its pretty good considering out of 80 repairs only one had an issue and it was because she asked for the wrong tip.

I will have a lathe next month that will allow me to start building cues, I hope that one day I will be as good maybe better than Ryan, or the others. I'm 35 hopefully I'll live another 30+ years I have all that time to learn all the things needed to be among the greats.

So when your lathe gets there you will be ready to build? I wish it was so easy. I guess you will just order some wood and have some cues ready to go in a couple of weeks. And don't worry about the finish, it sounds like your an expert already. Just throw it on and sand it smooth, too easy.
 
You wanna really get Ryan?
Its easy, get a turkey call and walk around his house using it at 12am.

And don't worry too much if you hear a shell being pumped into a 12 gauge.

I wish I could build cues.
