VanDenBerg ..... Not

Mostly due to the posts of Silencer, who has every right to be a Nick VanDenBerg fanatic, Nick has gotten a whole lot of attention in this forum of late, and I'm about to give him even more. It really seemed to me that Silencer's assessments of Nick's game, in which he always attempts to put Nick on a par with the game's superstars, were absurd. Then, I figured, well maybe VanDenBerg is doing great things in Europe that we just don't hear about in the states, so I reviewed his recent performances on the Eurotour. What I learned is that in the last four events on the Eurotour, he has finished as follows:

Germany 10/15/03 17th place
Belgium 12/04/03 65th place
Italy 4/21/04 5th place
Germany 5/4/004 65th place

At present, VanDenBerg is ranked 18th on the Eurotour.
Eurotour fields are tough, typically including Hohmann, Souquet, Feijen and Ortmann (the Finn Mika Immonen resides in the states and doesn't play the Eurotour), but these fields are very weak compared to the fields found in events such as the BCA Open, US Open, and World Pool Championships, and are more comparable to fields typically found on the Joss Tour or Florida Men's tour.

Nick VanDenBerg is a solid young player with some promise, but if he can't do any better than this on the Eurotour, on what basis can one project greatness for him?

A much more interesting question than whether Nick will ever be counted among the elite is whether he'll be a Mosconi Cup team member in 2004 for Europe. If I'm the European captain, I'm going with Niels Feijen over Nick.

Thank you so much for the accurate information SJM, but I doubt you will silence The Silencer with the truth, he seems oblivious to it! Putting NVDB on a par with the best of the best is almost as ridiculous as thinking Allison or Karen could beat Earl or Efren. I wonder who The Silencer thinks would win a matchup with Allison and Nick? See you on the table.......Marc

I'm trying to educate, not silence, the Silencer, who is, and will always be entitled to his opinions. Nick may be a future star. Who really knows? I just don't reckon Nick has earned more attention than other promising young talents (such as Mike Davis, for example).

No doubt, if Allison were to play Nick, Silencer would predict that Nick would silence her.

the only basis i had to judge nick van den berg, was the only time i saw him play. and that was on the mosconi cup. he was in my opinion the best player alive. as far as your research, and how he did in the euro tour, i find this disheartening. it makes me sad, that he hasn't played well outside of the mosconi cup. as far as fisher and van den berg matched up? intresting, my two favorites. let's see, i think van den berg would have a strong start, fisher would come back and make it hill-hil, and then it's any ones guess.

I haven't seen the Mosconi Cup for this year yet but from the previous matches he had in them matchroom tournies frankly I just wasn't too impress.

This is Nick's Profile at the 2003 World Pool Championships:

Last 12 Months: Dutch No. 1 ranked, Euro-Tour No. 1 ranked, 2002 Mosconi Cup winning team member, BCA Open - 9th

Highlight Of Career: Austrian Open champion, Dutch champion (13 times), 2002 Mosconi Cup winning team member

Not bad for a young upcoming player....

Ladies and gentlemen, I think I've figured it out. SILENCER is purposely fitting the role of the world's biggest chump on purpose. This is all a ploy to find him some action. Sorry I had to blow your cover man, but you went overboard. Nobody could be that dumb.

it's all mental, it's all mental. if nick can keep his head, stay focused, he will be ranked the #1 male player in the world, and player of the year for 2004. you may say, "dude, this kid isn't even on the map!" true, but when i watch pool on t.v. i WATCH POOL ON T.V.!!!!!!!!! i study every decision, and every move. nothing is left to chance. and when under my microscope, van den berg is the next "thing", except, unlike corey, nick is here to stay.

you said you've only seen him once...i've seen him 5 times or something....how can you base you're answer on seeing him once.....so he had a good day...what about the other days the 5 times i've seen him lose.

El Nino...

I've seen Nick play enough times (dozens of times) to know that he will be a hell of a player within a few years.

At least, I hope so because he has the stroke, talent and potential.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Silencer, nobody suggests that Nick doesn't show some promise. As the starter of this thread, I tried to take a very objective look at Nick and his playing record. Based on what you've written, I've seen him play much more than you, including live at last year's BCA Open, in which his play was admirable. I've been around the pro game since the late 60's, and feel qualified to have an opinion on which players show the most potential. Nonetheless, what I've offered is no more than my opinion, but I've tried to be very objective.

You may turn out to be right about VanDenBerg, as you are a pool fanatic with an educated opinion, but you should be very respectful of all on this forum who also have educated opinions. Those, like me, around the game for years and years remember where the games of those who went on to become legends were early in their professional campaigns. Archer won his first world championship when he was about the age Nick is now. Same with Allen Hopkins. Of course, others, such as Varner, were closer to 30 when they won their first world championship, but the signs that Varner would be a great one were there earlier than that.

Many of us on the forum don't see the signs of greatness in Nick, but I'll be happy for you, and for Nick, if we turn out to be wrong. Nothing anyone on this AZB board says should stop you from advocating and cheering for a player you obviously admire a lot. Keep the faith.

Wow, what a positive post. People like you can bring these threads to a respectable close.

Tappity tap tap.

Check out his web-site www.nickvandenberg.com

I am from holland and I have organized several tournaments were nick was present and he is a great player who has the talent to get him to the top.

His first mosconi-cup was a top display of what he can!
At this moment he is not playing at his best but believe me that he will be playing at his best on the WPC. But if its good enough for the title???

Niels Feijen plays at the same club as I am and he is in top shape. Not only that but he is also in love (that helps). I sure that he will be running those racks in the WPC

And the person that you all forgett is ALEX LELY. He was alway's the best player at the WPC and he is good as a long tournament player.

This team has won the golden medal this year at the Europeen Championship with Rico Diks!

Niels Feijen straightpool gold medal (3 years in a row)
Nick van den Berg 3th at Nine ball
Riko Diks second (silver) with 8-ball

Gold medal with the teams with a superb display by alex lely

So the have beaten all the top europeen players this year at the Europeen Championships

Your a freakin' idiot! To have such a strong opinion about a player you saw play once on TV, this isn't even worth my typing. I knew you were a dumbass I just didn't think you were this big of one.

On Nick's Side

I'll keep Nik side here not only because I saw him on tv, but also because I've played him during practice session before a major tournament in the USA. Of course practice is different, but still it will tell you a lot about a player abillity. Also to play on Masconi Cup you must be a top player, there is no doubt there. He is youngest player, that ever play in MASCONI CUP. Euro tours are different, than American, but not worst. Some players like Oliver Ortman, only come to USA for Masconi Cup or vacation maybe. Americans are a little bit stronger mentaly, that is why they have more sucsess over europeans.
