Mostly due to the posts of Silencer, who has every right to be a Nick VanDenBerg fanatic, Nick has gotten a whole lot of attention in this forum of late, and I'm about to give him even more. It really seemed to me that Silencer's assessments of Nick's game, in which he always attempts to put Nick on a par with the game's superstars, were absurd. Then, I figured, well maybe VanDenBerg is doing great things in Europe that we just don't hear about in the states, so I reviewed his recent performances on the Eurotour. What I learned is that in the last four events on the Eurotour, he has finished as follows:
Germany 10/15/03 17th place
Belgium 12/04/03 65th place
Italy 4/21/04 5th place
Germany 5/4/004 65th place
At present, VanDenBerg is ranked 18th on the Eurotour.
Eurotour fields are tough, typically including Hohmann, Souquet, Feijen and Ortmann (the Finn Mika Immonen resides in the states and doesn't play the Eurotour), but these fields are very weak compared to the fields found in events such as the BCA Open, US Open, and World Pool Championships, and are more comparable to fields typically found on the Joss Tour or Florida Men's tour.
Nick VanDenBerg is a solid young player with some promise, but if he can't do any better than this on the Eurotour, on what basis can one project greatness for him?
A much more interesting question than whether Nick will ever be counted among the elite is whether he'll be a Mosconi Cup team member in 2004 for Europe. If I'm the European captain, I'm going with Niels Feijen over Nick.
