Vantage conical to straight taper.

I found a classic mcdermott butt with matching rings and a predator vantage shaft for sale.

I am curious if I can have it turned town to a 12 inch straight taper at 12.75" or is this going to ruin the shaft. I know you can turn down a vantage to 12.5 but can you change the actual taper from conical to straight?

IIRC the Vantage has what they call a 'ProV' taper which is kind of a modified pro taper, sort of a conical/pro hybrid. Seyberts would know, contact them.

Why not just get a 314 shaft?
You can sell the vantage shaft, whatever you’d get for it plus what you’d save on the work for turning it down, you’ll be able to fund a 314 shaft

Still be cheaper just to turn it down. $40-50 plus tip. Seyberts does a lot of Pred. shaft mods, shouldn't have any trouble with it. Any good cue mech. can do this.

We don’t know if it’s possible and that it won’t damage the shaft or hurt its playability.
Since there is an option for the specs that he wants in a different shaft, why not just get the correct shaft?
I’m assuming that the shaft is part of the cue for sale, and as both the Vantage and 314-3 cost new about the same. Maybe he can do an exchange later on with someone.
As the shaft is partially hollow, I wouldn’t want to change its taper.
If there is one thing I have learned about shopping is get what you really want, it’ll end costing less than any other route.

Just my opinion.

People re-taper Preds all the time. They play fine.

myea.. i have turned down a couple. don't think i would attempt a vantage though, not knowing the wall thickness. i would just buy a 314 if i were him. the vantage is a weird specimen in the predator fauna imo. probably aimed at the asian market where they still like thicker shafts

I dont have the funds. Its a steel joint mcdermott cue with vantage for $450.

Ill have to give seyberts a call thanks guys. I lost my msp-mt mezz in a house fire and my mezz axi 156 was stolen from a pool hall in tacoma years back. I havent played since. I have stage 2 abdominal cancer at 35 and am funding my own treatment. So I am short on funds. Im just looking to get the love for the game back. Life is short. Im not a pro or anything i was only a 5. But I loved the game and only gave it up in 2020 becasue of the fire and theft of my cues.

Good luck with the treatment, wishing you all the health in the world and welcome back to the game.
I would try to play with it as is, who knows, maybe you'll like it like that and if not you can try to turn it down

I appreciate it. Im just going to buy it. Ive been looking for a cue for 6 months now and finally found something in my price range. Cant believe what mezz is going for now on japans ebay. They want $1500-$2500 for basic mezz msps, ec7s, and axis now. This is the cue. Its listed in a closed group and he was willing to come down on price to $450 plus shipping from $600.

Im also aware of potential scams. Luckily paypal protection is decent and has protected me in the past. Hopefully it goes well. If you see anything that feels funky youre welcome to let me know before hand. Thanks again.

PS if you ever see a mezz with a gold laser engraving that says "Chase Ojala" at the bottom that is my cue.

I've been out of the cue repair business a while now, but I see no issue a Vantage could not have its taper made thinner in the stroking area.

The front of all predator cues is the weakest, because it is hollow. The 314 series have 2 diameters of hollow space. Closest to the tip is a large diameter for a few inches. Then further in, until about 6 total inches, its a slightly smaller diameter.

What this means is, if the front of the cue is taken down to a certain diameter, the portion behind it (even if at the same outer diameter) would be stronger, because the hole inside the shaft is smaller there.

One more comment, do you actually want the shaft to be perfectly parallel from the tip until 12 inches back, at a diameter of 12.75 mm? If so, that's not that common. I don't think it would be that comfortable, because at 12" to the joint, it will have a much more abrupt change. Your stroke still goes beyond the 12" mark.

I am hoping for a similar feel and diameter to a mezz wd700. Which is what im most used to. But I figured going to 12.5 pro taper like a wd700 would be too much for the vantage. I figured a 12.75mm pro taper as close to a wd700 pro taper as posisble would be worth trying. Ideally if I had the money I would buy this mezz axi from Japan and try and trade the shaft for a WD700 long term.
