What type and what H/P. Single phase A/C variable speed reversing motors are very expensive. A DC motor and drive would be more economical if in a smaller size. On my larger lathes I went to 3 phase motors with VFD converters. One of the best things I ever did for convenience of operation.

I have a little Sherline motor with variable and reverse on a old Porper lathe. I was surprised By the torque It has for such a small 90v DC motor.
