Recently I purchased a Varney J/B from Qualitycues (first rate transaction BTW
) and I wanted to post a review for my fellow AZBr’s. As far as looks are concerned, everything is top notch. The points are nice and sharp and the Micarta rings are immaculate. I had never seen a joint pin like the one on this cue it is huge and just looks first rate. The butt connects flush to the rest of the cue when separated for jumping and all colors have a very nice contrast to each other. As for the canvas resin tip it is rock-solid and can hold chalk as well as any leather tip I have ever used. Now to the meat and potatoes, breaking with the VJB. Upon receiving my VJB in the mail I literally ran to my local pool-hall (across the street). I would love to tell you that I set up a nine-ball rack and just crushed the 9 into the corner on my first break….but the truth is I smashed whitey off center missing the 1 off center and flew the ball across two tables LOL. It has some pop. All right so with my new toy I felt like Rick Vaughn in Major League I needed control before I killed someone. Therefore, I went to my instructor and had some classes in which we discussed breaking, strategies, the rack, and how to harness our energy for the most power. For reference after five breaks of 8-ball I was averaging 19.8mph, spread the rack 100%, controlled the cue-ball 50%, and pocketed a ball 80%. So I came back practiced what I learned and I am now applying it to my break. Pardon me but HOLY SHIAT…this puppy can break. My nine-ball break is up to 23.5mph, last night I pocketed the nine 4 times(not in a row) and my highest break was 4 balls. I did not pocket a ball every time but I parked whitey around 85% of the time I broke. I might jump once a night so I am not the best person to talk about jumping. Although full cue I jumped balls with ease. Overall I have to say this is a wonderful product and is a completely custom break cue compared to others I have used in the past. So if you are looking for some pop and park action in your break this bad boy can help. It may not be heaven sent but after every break I cannot wait until I break again. And we all know the only way to do that!
