I was asked a question from a friend that is going to Vegas for the tourney's about if they check everyones break cue's for phenolic tips ? Reason being he has a Mezz with there stock tip on it and was told it is phenolic and thats the way it comes off the shelf. So do they check everyones or only if theres a complaint or if someone says something to a official ? I figured someone would know on here. But I dont know why a company like Mezz would put tips on cues that are not allowed and still have pro's useing their cues and alot of regular players and right off the back the tip needs changed. I think he said the tip on his Daul Force is a trance tip ,,,, Thanks

I've never seen a tip checked. The opposing team/individual could complain to the ref. though. I started using an extremely hard layered tip that the cue maker took down to about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from the ferrel and don't see any difference in breaking or jumping. I actually like it better now that I'm used to it and don't even pack the phenolic anymore.

I have seen a tip checked before...a few times actually.

If he chalks it...he's a goner. There isn't any mistaking that sound.

I once saw 'Champagne' Edwin Kelly (Hall of Fame member) get disqualified for using a Predator break cue that came with a phenolic tip on it. He swears he didn't know it was phenolic.

The T.D. went and took the stick from him and went to the office. They made a phone call to Predator and gave the serial number of the stick to them. Predator looked it up, and said "Yes, that's a phenolic tip on it".

Happened during the IPT days when the money was good in pool. The Hall of Fame members playing in it were getting 'automatic' cash for playing in it.

Ed Kelly had some coming when he was disqualified...ooops.

That DQ cost him several thousands of dollars! He didn't have to win a game, he was guaranteed money.

And left without a cent.

Really think it's worth it??

Below is what I could find in the BCAPL rulebook that pertains to the cue.

So from what I can find, you just cant have a non leather tip on your break cue and if you do and use it, it would be considered a foul.

Now your friends opponent would have to call a ref over to confirm that it is a non leather tip. That puts the ownership on your friends opponent to call the ref if your friend is using a non leather tip to break with. But also, all players are given a rulebook as part of joining the BCAPL and its your friends responsibility to adhere to the rules.

9. Cues
a. The width of the cue tip must not exceed 14 millimeters. There is no minimum width.
b. The weight of the cue must not exceed 25 ounces. There is no minimum weight.
c. The length of the cue must be at least 40 inches. There is no maximum length.
d. The cue tip must be composed of leather, fibrous, or pliable material. The contacting surface of the cue tip of any cue used for a break shot must be made entirely of leather.

2. Situation: Player B questions the legality of Player A's cue and summons a referee (a) before Player A has used the cue to execute a shot; (b) after Player A has used the cue to execute a shot. In both cases (a) and (b), the referee determines that the cue is illegal.
Ruling: (a) No foul, but the cue must be removed from play; (b) Foul.

Steve Lomax & Joe Blackburn have a booth set up out there to do repairs. Your friend could just get a leather break tip put on when he gets there, before playing. But yeah, phenolic tips are illegal.

I think he will just take his other break cue,,it's not worth it to take the set up mezz has on it for the tourney. I have a samsara on mine and it breaks better then any phenolics I ever had. He just wanted to take the cue he use's all the time and thats why he bought the mezz for how their cue play and break. To take the stock set up off would just take away from why mezz puts it all together. I think it dont make sence for company's to put this stuff out there and endorse them and then they not be legal for tourney's. He will just have to take another cue,,,thanks

Last year the officials brought the cues to our booth for tip inspecion. We were given the job by the BCA to check all tips in question. The players were
told the tips would have to be changed before the cue could be used.We changed a few hundred or so last year at the BCA.I'm sure we'll be doing the same this year.

Best Wishes,

Steve
