Vernon came to Cleve. back in 78 or so later we figured out Big Brad was theguy who snuck him in,he was big guy with a nice stroke,he beat a few shortstops, then someone called me after he beat Mark Maryo and Baby- face(M.Gulyassy) I played some 9-ball for 30 and he beat me out of 300, I tried to adjust and he was not very accomadating, anyway I got poed and told him why don't you go back wherever the f##k you came from,he said you should respect your elders BOY! i forgot hoow big he was! I said I won't say another word SIR! sat down and shutup. Buddy said in his book people flew Mr.Elliott(i learned) all over the south for big games and he beat everybody! ran into him at Bill Bailey's in Chattanoga a few years ago he still had a beautiful stroke, thats my VE story Doug (he sent me a PM)

That is NOT the JR I am familiar with. The JR I knew was an absolute gentleman, very reserved and a man of very few words.

I'm from Chattanooga and know Vernon personally and he was a legendary player. At banks and one pocket it was unbelievable.

Hey JR,
How are you hitting them now? I have a good game I could steer you into down South but the player is no chump. Also How good was some of the Akron boys 20 years ago? (Jerry Woolf, Chick, Barry Hixon, Ed Becker, Dave Myers, etc) A am curious how well Dave Myers played because when I was playing in the early and mid-ninties he played lights out. One last thing JR did you ever see my grandfather match up when you were a kid (Don Willis)? Let me know please also PM if your intersted in playing the game I have in mind.

jerry wolf

I lived in akron from 88 to 91 and the player that I really wanted to be was jerry I never saw him lose he would walk in with a big thermos and just get coffee and leave unless someone wanted to play and then it was lights out.I should have watched more of the players mentioned above instead of running around with chicken george keisalat

Dennis(Action)Jackson was the best after Emil Glokar went to Vegas, Jerry was a shortstop who I'M sure Mario Cilitti would have played for some big$ Dennis and Mario had heart&gamble.

> I used to live in Akron, and what used to be Starcher's had an ESPN lineup at one time. All the guys Leil mentioned, plus it seemed like 8-10 others that played close. Two guys he didn't mention were Chico Minson and Mikey Vero. Chico was just about always the best dressed guy in the room, and played pretty sporty. Mikey played as good for 2 dollars a game as he did for 500 a set. Tommy D.

JR,
was that Brian Jackson (I went in with Dennis Wade, Mario Cilliti backing Jerry Slivka when Jerry was about 18 against Brian, We lost) or Dennis Jackson? When did Jack Hynes first make his appearance in Akron? I took him on the road about 93 or 94.

JR,
I saw Gerry Wolf in Akron a couple weeks ago and talked to him for a couple hours. He was really a very good player but hated to loose and didn't play as good when he gambled---Just like Parker. Gerry hasn't played in years.
Mario Ciliti and Curly Moon stayed with me a couple years ago in Nashville but turned down a game with Jimmy Reid. I don't think Mario is playing much anymore.

Bill Stern was also a good player but when he killed his girlfriend and shot a couple cops his play has been limited to the Gray Bar Hotel.

Oh well---the old days at Twinsburg are just a memony.

Vern Elliot was in Nashville at JOB's for the Music City Open this year. He remembered all the players you mentioned and refered to them as short stops.
No offense meant. He did have some good stories but since his stroke he has been confined to a wheel chair.

This was one of Vern's favorite money shots.

Both the cue ball and the Nine ball are against the rail. Bank the Nine in the side. I think he took some of that Cleveland money home with him with that shot.Do you remember it?

Don't remember that shot but sorry to hear about his health,we were shortstopswhen you played that man,he played the game we dream about!People don't realize how hard it was to beat a guy in his home, the only thing in a roadman's favor might be a little fearif they don't know you.Vernon did it for years thats how great a player he was, waiting for Grady's memories he's got the best stories.

TJ, I am really glad you posted this shot. For YEARS, a couple of guys who saw Vernon play have sworn that the nine ball was on the diamond past the side pocket not next to the pocket.
Thanks,
