Vertical line on carbon fiber shaft?

Just an interesting tidbit related to carbon fiber but not pool. I dont know what the process is called but when we have a carbon fiber driveshaft made for our racecars they are wound 1 string of carbon fiber at a time until there is a 4" O.D. tube ready for billet yokes. I wonder what process they use for cues???

I don't think the box they sent it is was substantial. It should have been sent in a strong tube or a triangle box. I was curious and I just looked up Mezz Ignite cue. That is like a $600.00 cue and they ship it like that. I might be picky enough to ask for an exchange. As well as request it be sent better packaged. Sometimes all you have to do is ask.

I buy steel rods from a supplier. I have had boxes break open and some be missing. The rods due to their weight can break through the bottom of the box. I finally requested they be put them in a heavy shipping tube expecting an argument. They arriver wrapped like a valuable collectable. All I had to do was ask.

I agree on the container. A plastic or cardboard tube in a tri box would be better.

I remember when the Agas ferrules came out. I don't know if that is spelled right. I stopped installing them. You could be almost finished and something would get into the little voids and you would have to do it over. Because they were white anything that got in made them unacceptable.
 
Just a quick update, they are saying the following:
  • The line is normal and part of the process of how they wrap the CF material. What is important is that I don't feel any seems moving my finger across the line and that it is smooth to the touch.
  • Their CF shafts are durable by nature and the damage to the boxes should not have caused any damage to the shaft itself. That said, I can send it back in for inspection.

If you can't feel a crack/void i wouldn't worry about it. Whatever Mezz says i'd go with. If they'll inspect/switch at no charge then go for it.

Man, the Cuetec Cynery CF shafts have a line- it is faint, but you can see if if you really look. It does not affect play in any way at all. You are wasting your time sending it back- two more trips in the mail and something might REALLY happen to that shaft. None of the CF manufacturers are going to talk about a line in their promotions, but they are there, some may be more faint than others, none would affect play at all.

From a pool playing standpoint if you want to use CF shafts, get this out of your head! Otherwise you will be looking for that line when you should be looking at the CB or OB.

Agree here. I'd send it back if cracked but not for cosmetic reason.

Since I know it's part of the manufacturing process, it's out of sight out of mind. I just needed to know it wasn't a defect as I haven't ever owned a CF shaft before. Thanks for all the help!

That's along the lines of what I was thinking. I've seen plenty of lines on carbon fiber bikes

I completely agree with you. If the line on the shaft is visible enough to be seen while playing it would be a problem for me personally. I have always taken great care of my equipment in every sport and in my career. If I could see that line while playing it would probably put me on tilt, LOl.. That is why I NEVER roll my playing shaft on a table, I don't want to know!

So what is the final answer. Are you keeping the shaft as is or returning it in hope of getting one without a visible line?? I already know what I would do and that might have to do with resale value.... Just in case CF was not my cup of tea...

I am keeping it. The line is only really visible under bright light and scrutiny. It doesn't affect my play and if I do occasionally notice it when playing with it, I can just rotate the shaft.
