Very cool cue for sale on ebay

Evidently not worth the opening bid price of $10,000. You'll notice no bids.

I really like this cue. Its the coolest McDermott I've ever seen. It's a bit outside of my budget however. What do you suppose its actually worth?

It looks to have Meucci/Wicco points and an acrylic window. Not what you'd generally think of when talking about a McDermott cue.

I am not sure the cue is a McDermott, looks a great deal like a Proto-type Viking cue to me.

Maybe I am just cynical, but even the name in the window doesn't look complete. If I were interested in the cue I would contact the seller and have some better photo's posted that clearly show the name and by.
A certificate of authenticity from Jim McDermott also would not hurt, especially with that price tag.

I have to agree with you. I spoke directly to Jim McDermott about a product in 1989 at the Peter Vitalie tournament. I asked him why he never built a stainless steel jointed cue. He said he never would (although he as since making that statement). I don't believe he ever made a stainless (or metal) joint before 1995 (at least). This cue looks like it has a metal joint. I don't think its a McDermott either.

It says in his description that it says By McDermott. But the pic is not at the best angle to see it. I personally have very little doubt as to its authenticity, but a certification letter would be a wise thing to appropriate in any case. that's for sure.

Ummm . . . . the cue has "DERMOTT" engraved on the butt, but not "McDERMOTT" as far as I can tell.

But what do I know.

It may well be a Mcdermott, but if I saw that cue across a room I would certainly think it was Viking. The name in the window mean little if anything, that can be very easily changed, so like I said with all the phoney cues being sold to day without a letter from Jim McDermott that cue is not worth considering.

It's is no different buying a Szamboti that Barry has never looked at, or Balabushka without a letter from Tascarella it is just not worth the risk, especially for something with that cues asking price.

Take care Jayman.

Jim made cues with brass, nickle silver, and stainless joints in the early 70's, per request......they were an option on the MR and B and C models. He did not want to add them to his standard line. He finally added a line of cues with a piloted stainless joint with the EK series.

best guess, $1,000-$2,500. You'd EASILY see it selling for more on any one of the cuebroker websites (members included).

No one understands skepticism when it comes vintage cues more than I do. So I certainly understand yours.
Since it"s obviously a very well made cue from the 1970's, There are relatively few people it could reasonably be attributed to during that time period . I can't really see someone changing a one of a kind Viking etc..into to something it's not. Especially a McDermott of all things.. I could understand maybe trying to pass it off as a Palmer or something people would associate with that style of cue. I have to think that as nice a cue as it is, It would have stood well on its own merits without having to pass it off as a McDermott.

I asked him about that. Here was his reply.

Hi, just added better pictures of the view window and "Mc Dermott" label. Notice the spacing between the c & d...that's the way he represented himself at the time. I have added several other photos as well. If you have other questions please let me know.

Thanks-
Matt

I totally agree, it certainly could have stood alone without any lable applied to it at all. But it is obvious the seller doesn't know much if anything about cues. His entire description appears to be copied from another source of information.

People like this in my opinion are just fishing for some one who also doesn't know anything about cue design from that time frame.

I do want to make something very clear, however, I do respect your opinion very much and I have learned a thing or two from your posts about Adam and Viking cues over the year's, so let me say thanks very much for the thread and your thoughts on this cue.

Craig,

I have the utmost respect for you and a compliment coming from you really means a lot to me. Thank you.

Yes, this guy has no idea at all about cues or their value. He is so far off on this one that even though I would really like to make him an offer on it, I think it would seem to him as though I was being quite ridiculous.
I think some times a family heirlooms of sorts I.E Dads custom made pool cue, seem some how priceless to family members. It can be hard for them to see them in the same way others do. particularly if it was very precious to that member of the family. I kind of suspect that may be the case here.
