I believe he could have stopped off of the 7. If he couldn't, he should still have followed the basic end pattern that I outlined.
Everybody is going to see something different, and everybody will come up with different solutions, just read the "Run This" series in this forum. In the first rack, I saw about 3 separate but different end patterns - but I decided to choose the easiest one to illustrate my point.
The shot you are talking about, I know how to manipulate the cue ball to get in line for the 6 with very little movement. I call them "snip shots" where you gently push the center axis of the object ball ball towards the center of the pocket pocket and stun or freeze the cue ball or draw back a hair. I call them "snip shots", Filipino player Edgar Acaba is a master at these types of shots.
