Just uploaded to Youtube my latest conversion of a home-recorded VHS of the original 1986 telecast of the historic casino tournament. This one features two dramatic, very close semifinal matches:

-- Jose Garcia vs Danny Medina

-- Jose Garcia vs NickVarner -- starts at exactly 39:42. Visuals a bit fuzzy, however I’m glad I *did* get to rescue and digitize the deteriorating tape in time.

Here’s the Youtube link:

Enjoy.

Great stuff here and great memories for me. Pat Fleming and I were the co TD's of this event. If you think these guys couldn't play you're wrong! Check out the cut shot Danny makes at the 19:40 mark. He must have thought he was on a bar table! Nearly 30 years ago and first prize was $40,000. That's like winning a hundred grand today. We used to have at least four or five events a year with big first prizes (25K or more) back in the 80's. You could make a score once in a while if you played like Sigel, Strickland or Buddy.

Wow look at the payout difference between 1st and 2nd in this event

Thanks for the video great stuff

Was this the tourney that they used the same cloth they used to cover the card and crap tables with instead of billiard cloth in order to get the "Resorts" logo on the table?

Why I asked is the table plays appears to play very slow.

It's the tourney for which I Youtubed the three closing Sigel matches two weeks ago. Full description and link are in this thread I posted two weeks ago:

You'll see Sigel working towards and winning the historic 40K 1st prize.

Thanks for some more great videos Arnaldo. Having not seen the Medina vs Garcia match since it was first broadcast, I still remembered this match and the cut shot Danny made back then.

Another important reasons people should backup their old VHS collections (to more than one place).

To me, that shot is doubly impressive because the OB was off the rail a bit and it needed a pure cut. Frozen to the rail is slightly "easier" (not to misuse that term) because it opens up the possibility of the common way of making it -- using inside english + arriving rail-first, which generally raises the make-percentage (in my experience at least).

Cole Dickson used to do his well-known $100 proposition bet on the road, where he'd place an OB frozen to the center diamond position of the foot rail and the CB almost touching the head rail in its center diamond position. He'd bet $100 dollars that within two attempts, using a house cue, he'd pocket the OB in either corner pocket of that foot-end of the table that *you'd" designate. Reportedly, he never lost that bet. He'd load up the necessary inside english, the CB would curve out on the way then back in, and arrive rail-first behind the OB and pocket the shot. It's a remarkable-looking shot that with practice and developing a feel for it, you can eventually count on making at least 3 or 4 out of 10 times -- but hardly enough to dependably bet on, as in Cole's two attempts for $100.

Couple of different friends of mine in various towns and cities across the country witnessed him performing the shot against many bettors who thought this hippie with the long blond hair was stoned out on something. Kind of like Newman's character,"Eddie Felson" appearing like a very drunk ball-banger then coming with a ridiculous-appearing, virtual trick shot for everybody's cash.

" I heard a story yesterday of a Canadian player...
Went to Philadelphia to play some...early 80's
Heard there was action there"
He played Sigel 1st-almost won...Played Alan Hopkins next, almost won, Played Steve Mizerak, almost won...
Played all the men back to back,
Didn't know who they were"

So this was '86 and they were still playing ball in hand anywhere on the table after foul.

So when did this huge change from the fantastic 2 foul pushout crap rules take place?

Only one I could think of would be Jumpin Joe? Would not really put him against any of the 3 listed though. I watched Earl blast through him in Raleigh one time. Quite comical match with Earl going on about it being like a circus or something (this was the early 90s).
