Video: 1988 (per multiple requests): Keith McCready v Reyes + McCready v Strickland

McCready had the strangest stance I've ever seen. How did he play so well with such an unorthodox stance? I wonder why he chose such a stance.

keith learned to play as a small child, so the stance, grip and the side stroke stayed with him for all these many years.

Nice videos, thanks for sharing! Both these players have such unorthodox strokes/stances and opposite personalities that make the videos that much more enjoyable...

back then, efren's stroke was sooo unorthodox, to the point where you'd think there's no way this guy can play. funny, now the efren 'pump' stroke seems more like the norm.

I think it's interesting that not only is keith smoking on tv, but the spectators too. right around the 20 minute mark, you can see a lady in the stands smoking. hell, nowadays, for better or for worse, you can't even smoke in the local pool hall, let alone a televised tournament.

Yes, I noticed that too. Times have certainly changed regarding smoking in public. I think it is for the better. I don't smoke and find it annoying to deal with second hand smoke- the smell and the possible health implications

Oldtimers will recognize a middle-aged Richie Florence, moderately overweight, a few rows back in the sky-blue shirt and sitting and 'splaining things with his teenage son or nephew. Richie, as he got older, turned from great young superstar to event promoter. I hate seeing him light up a smoke a few times during the games. For most of the 20th century smoking was the norm in all high-stakes pool gambling, all tournaments, and virtually all local pool venues and fraternal organizations with pool tables. Richie eventually passed away much too young -- in his mid-fifties from cardiac challenges. We lost a lot of great players and pool buddies much too early partly attributable to the cigs.

Wow....Thaank You. :thumbup::clapping::clapping:

This sure beats an aiming thread any day of the week.

Both Keith and Earl played quite poorly in their match. Looked like Keith couldn't settle in and Earl seems to get rattled when he couldn't close it out early.

WHo did Earl play in the finals and who won?

As I mentioned in post #1 of this thread, the final was between Earl Strickland and Mike Sigel. Also within that post I included the link to my channel at the point where the final of this tournament starts. Here again is the link as posted:

When Keith is playing Efren you can see a young Dennis Hatch sitting near the front of the audience.:thumbup:

Thanks for posting. This is how I remember McCready. In fact, even younger. That was way back at the Billiard Palace in Bellflower, CA. I first remember him 'woofing' Cole when he was about maybe 15 or so.

The Ether!! I remember this like it was yesterday... Keith learned pool when he was really young, when he couldn't reach over the table completely... so he side arm stroked to reach shots... and never changed it. There's only one Keith..
