Video Encyclopedia of One Pocket (VEOP)

We hope many of you enjoy and benefit from VEOP. Please post reviews on this thread (good or bad) so other will know what you think. Thanks in advance!
I try a review. Bought the VEOP on the first day and finished watching 4 out of 5 parts.

It’s an encyclopedia meaning the authors try to cover all possible aspects of the game. This means every single aspect gets actually relatively little screen time. To study things in depth there are links and supplemental material available. But the links are free and you wouldn’t need to buy the VEOP series to study it.

I was mostly interested in part IV for banking systems and was a little disappointed from the actual material on VEOP. (The part I missed most was help / reference lines for straight back banks from the short rail if balls are positioned diagonally opposite of my pocket. Since I can't use diamonds from the opposite rail for reference or system. I try to add a picture, of what I mean.) I did find most the information I was searching for through the supplemental material. So I did get the information I was searching for. And this information was provided by dr_dave and was very helpful. But I am a little ambivalent about spending 80 Euros to get this information, since the clip that helped me most was actually available for free at the end. I kinda see the price for the VEOP as a contribution and support for the life work and all the learning tools dr_dave provided over the years and I am glad to support his work. (But if 80$ is too much for you, you can find all the needed information for free. While most of it will still come from dr_dave’s material.)

Main problem of our time is not lack of information but an overwhelmingly abundance of it and it’s very helpful to get a sorted version of it so one doesn’t lose oneself in all the available videos and posts and threads. This is where VEOP does a great job.

I am very happy to announce that after many months of hard work, Bob Jewett and I just finished up our new instructional video project: Video Encyclopedia of One Pocket (VEOP). Here's a trailer video that provides a good overview:

I will also be posting a collection of free excerpt clips over the next two weeks. VEOP is available now to stream or download, and we are also taking pre-orders for physical DVDs (to ship in late January or early February).

VEOP is a 5-volume series covering all the skills, knowledge, strategy, and moves you need to win at one-pocket (1P). It is a perfect set for a new player who wants to learn the game or a serious 1P player who wants to bring their game to the next level. VEOP covers all types of offensive and defensive shots and moves, the rules and how to take advantage of them, the break, game strategy, useful kicking and banking systems and references, end-game strategy, the up-table game, and much more. VEOP will help you become a smarter player, expand your repertoire of shots (in all games), learn how to use the right strategies based on the ball count, and win more games and matches. And the series includes countless example shots and moves by top pros from the best 1P matches of all time.

Here's a detailed outline of the entire series.

We hope many of you enjoy and benefit from VEOP. Please post reviews on this thread (good or bad) so other will know what you think. Thanks in advance!

Is the cover art included or in addition? I have been working personally with Tom Wirth. I’ll like the disc set for whatever comes out of it. Anything new/learned is a bonus. To be honest I’m considering purchasing the entire set to support Dr. Dave’s work/contribution to pool. It’s people like him keep us motivated to play better pool. Without teachers/instructors we never improve. I don’t.

Thanks for your purchase and feedback.

It’s an encyclopedia meaning the authors try to cover all possible aspects of the game.

That was the goal, based on the detailed outline.

This means every single aspect gets actually relatively little screen time. To study things in depth there are links and supplemental material available. But the links are free and you wouldn’t need to buy the VEOP series to study it.

Some topics get much more time than others. For complicated topics that have already been covered before (e.g., details of how to aim when using sidespin, or details on complicated bank-shot aiming systems), we provide links to useful supporting resources on the VEOP Online Resources page. As you point out, all this stuff is free, but VEOP shows how, when, and why to use it in a wide range of one-pocket (1P) situations.

A good example is the Corner-5 System. This system is already covered in detail on my website. To include all this info on VEOP would take too long (at the expense of other useful material). Instead, we showed simplified ways to use benchmark shots from the system, and adjust relative to them in various 1P game situations, without needing to learn the numbering systems and calculations. I think some people will find this very useful and valuable.

Agreed. I do have lots of free stuff available, and VEOP does leverage all this material. However, VEOP provides value by showing when, how, and why the techniques are applied in various 1P situations. We also show simplified and practical versions of the many of the standard kicking and banking systems.

Concerning how to aim 1-rail banks from up-table close to the opponent's side, you can use the 1/3-more-than-twice system demonstrated in VEOP, by using your cue to measure beyond the table. Here's an example demonstration of how to use your cue to measure off extended diamond distances. Alternatively, you could instead use the spot-on-the-wall approach we demonstrated for other types of banks and kicks.

Main problem of our time is not lack of information but an overwhelmingly abundance of it and it’s very helpful to get a sorted version of it so one doesn’t lose oneself in all the available videos and posts and threads. This is where VEOP does a great job.

Thanks. I agree that the main value of VEOP is its breath of organized coverage. Some topics, especially those not covered elsewhere, are covered in depth, but the main purpose is to provide a broad and efficient learning experience covering all important 1P shots, techniques, situations, and strategies to help inform and guide learning. The many hundreds of examples included (many from pro matches) also add value, IMO.

Regards,
Dave

Yes. When you purchase the whole set with the case, the cover art is on the front of the case.

And special thanks to Bob J. for his contributions to pool and the VEOP. Full DVD set ordered. Thanks, Frank

Agreed. Bob has done so much for pool for a long time.

He was certainly an important part of this project! I could not have done it without him. He taught me a lot.

Here as a bonus the quality of Dr. Dave's banking advice putting into practice. I played this opponent even in banks before. Played him yesterday full ring banks race to 23 (maximum of 3 racks). Leading 14:1 after first rack (8:7 in second and winning 23:8 overall). Now he quit playing me banks

Pocketed balls from first rack are in the video below (didn't know how to have the shots / safeties in between being shown in fast forward. If someone is interested in the whole match, I could post it.)

So judge for yourself is the banking advice is of any use :p

Nice shooting! I know VEOP and my supporting resources aren't mostly responsible for you success (you and your hard work are), but I am happy to hear you think they helped.

Thank you for the compliment. Practice only helps you improve, if you understand the underlying principles and know what to look for. And if you have a systematic approach (to train all important parts of the game). You have done a great job of showing and explaining the underlying principles in all aspects of pool. And you learning material is always very systematic

This video had analysis of banking angles for sliding balls.

banks systems.JPG

So every simplified system (like x2 + 1/3) has it's weaknesses since it's only true around the sweet spot. But the true lines showed here are exactly how the rails on my GC react and I have no problem memorizing it for every half diamond :)Same angles are true for long banks. One still needs to aim and hit the ball, where intended. But then balls go in "with net only". Even on tough 4 1/4 inch pockets.

No guessing left

But as you say at the end of every part of VEOP: watching videos alone won't make you a better player. Still have to go out there and practice the shots.

It's nice to watch people post videos of themselves playing.
