I was looking around youtube this morning and found this little gem of a clip from the 1995 World 8 Ball Championships semi-finals that went hill-hill between Mark Jarvis and Efren Reyes.

Mark gets out of line and makes a few INCREDIBLE shots in an attempt to get out of the final rack. It's an excellent display of heart and determnation by a great player!

Mark Jarvis Vs Efren Reyes - Semi Final 1995 8 Ball World Championship

What I noticed

he was shooting 'matter of factly', and did not look like someone shooting in the final rounds of a championship. The video indicated it was the championship match, not semi-final, I thought.

He did indicate any concern for ball patterns, it looked to me, and hence, got out of alignment. Yeah, nice 2 'hail mary' shots, but they could have been prevented to begin with. Like it was said, if he would have gone on the other side of the side pocket before shooting the 5, he had better options available for the rest of the run.

On the 3 ball shot, he shot it with high left english which slowed his cue ball off the 2nd rail. If he had shot that with low right english, and pulled some, the english would have taken, and he would have ended close to the side pocket with a shot on the 6 in the side pocket, and better to get on the 4 ball in the corner. That was a nice 4 ball shot he made, but it was the only shot he had.

If you watched Efren, he was 'careful' with his playing shape for the runout, Mark was 'not careful' on his shape.

Every good player knows it should be hardest to begin with, and easier at the end.

One final question: If Mark had won this championship instead of Efren, how would it have changed his life for the future?

Scott

If you go back and watch closely, this match is the semi-final... I believe the final match was Jeff Carter Vs Efren Reyes - and Efren won the final in a tough match against Jeff.

If Mark had won this match, I doubt it would have changed much in his life. This event was sort of put together at the last moment, in conjunction with a MPBT event that was going on at the same time, IIRC. Mark was and still is a great player, and a great guy. I'm sure he didn't allow this loss effect him at all - he's got the heart of a champion - and he lost to the greatest player in history - with a little help from himself.

Jarvis

I have a very cool DVD of Mark Jarvis playing Mike Siegel in the 1987 Pheasant Run Finals. Mark is an excellent shot maker with tremendous heart. Unfortunately for Mark, he was playing Mike Siegel. Our man Jay Helfert is one of the commentators and gives the best observational comment "Mark is a good player.. he's just up against a great player".

Why do these damnedable pool table images/gif takes SOOOOOOO darn long to load??? Makes these threads very not fun....

Cool stuff. Mark's always been one of my favorite players to watch. Lot of heart and an all-around great guy.
