The fact of people mentioning Irving Crane being an influence on their game got me wondering how many people have seen him play 14.1. The Balsis/Crane match is out there, but here are a few other games I picked up from Rolando Aravena, previously from Amsterdam Billiards.

If they don't download automatically, add ?dl=1

to the url and they should.

Dennis:

Thank you for posting this! I'm dl'ing now.

I actually have the 1966 Crane/Balsis match on DVD from Accu-Stats, and it's one of my favorite matches to watch, as an example of "14.1 from days past." The commentary is enjoyable, too. It's very tough finding commentators these days that can inject lively personality into what some would consider "a boring game" (to which I respond, the "bore" is not the game, but the viewer :p ). IMHO, the best commentator for 14.1 today is our own "Blackjack" Dave Sapolis -- his kind demeanor and passion for the game comes through in spades, just like the commentator for the Crane/Balsis video.

Yeah, the Crane Balsis match is a great one. Isn't the commentator "Whispering" Joe Wilson? I think he was a commentator for bowling back then also.

On these videos, there is no commentating and the quality is not as good, but at least we get to watch Crane and his patterns.

Blackjack would have been a welcome addition to the booth in Jersey this year. Danny D even recruited me to do commentary with him on one match but I chickened out. :o (talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel)

It was the Mika/Sigel 150 and out match. :speechless:

holy cow. you will regret it, dennis! commentating on 14.1 is easy. all you have to do is keep the other commentator from pining about the old days when he should be cementing on the game at hand. that's what i like about grady's commentary. he stays focused on the match even when his partner is blabbing a mile a minute about a match that happened 30 years ago.

It was indeed Whispering Joe Wilson. He was the Chicago bowling announcer in the 1950's and also announced some early Cubs games - a jack of all sports trades. Some people find his commentating on the Crane-Balsis match a nuisance, but not me. I loved Whispering Joe when I was a kid.

Dennis,

Thanks for the post, but my guess is that this was a popular post and exceeded the download limit for the file.
