Videos of Members Playing the Ghost??

Are you saying that the competition at "The Derby" is tougher than a weekly tournament in Hurst Texas? That's amazing, are you sure, or have you been to a tournament in Texas to make an accurate comparison?

It doesn't matter where the weekly tournament is being held, it's still not going to be as tough as a major event like those at Derby.

I don't even have to know who plays in the tournament you play in, to know that at worst, you're a slight favorite over the entire field.

The same couldn't be said if you decided to play in one of the tournaments at Derby or any other major event for that matter. So go ahead and keep on thinking you're impressing anyone by bragging about beating a bunch of locals.

We have a guy here that almost always wins our weekly tournament, and he has to give up the last 6 or 5 and the breaks to people. Only difference is he doesn't brag about it like you would.

Hank Haney even used some of the pool techniques when training Tiger Woods.

Actually pool is much like a smaller version of golf. Hank Haney even used some of the pool techniques when training Tiger Woods.....there is definitely a bridge between pool and golf, especially when applying zones and creating larger margin of error by how you approach the pocket/fairway/green.

I was watching a video golf lesson tonight from Hank Haney. If you are not a golfer, just know that Hank is one of, if not the best golf teacher/coach in the country. He made a reference to C.J. Wiley as he was playing 9-ball with him one day. Hank said that they give each other lessons. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that room. Anyway, Hank says to C.J., I can make the hard shots, but I still miss the easy shots. Why is that? C.J. says, "there are no easy shots". I think that what he means is that if you treat every shot the same, pretty soon the hard shots and easy shots are the same. Give the easy shots the same consideration that you would the hard shots to keep your mental focus. Anyway, I like that advice and thought it was pretty cool to hear C.J.'s name mentioned in the video. If you don't play golf, you can still learn from Hanks videos about how to manage yourself and keep things simple so that you don't make the big mistakes. I hope this helps you if you are missing the easy one's.
I'm not sure its fair or credible to compare golf & pool. (Tee shot v's Break shot) Apples and oranges big time IMO.

awesome for the "sweaters" and insurmountable for the players

Since when is talking about playing in tournaments on a pool forum bragging?

Wow, you don't think I'd be a favorite at the Derby, that's mind blowing. I have news for you, only one player will win (in each event) at the Derby, the rest will be lucky to break even.....this is awesome for the "sweaters" and insurmountable for the players. Then, if the foreign players win the casino takes out 30% off the top, never to be seen again.

This is a thread about members on this forum playing the ghost.....not who can break the best with a magic rack or run a rack of rotation with TOI. We don't care how you do it. Use a wooden, plastic, magic, or no rack at all. We don't care how you do in tournaments because that has nothing to do with the ghost.

I just thought it would be nice to see members here playing the ghost, any ghost, in a dedicated thread. We were trying to figure out how to get it started and having a nice discussion in this thread and it went south. I'd like to keep it on track unless that isn't possible any longer. If it's not possible I would rather see this thread deleted.

To those of you that have contributed in a positive manner, thank you it's very much appreciated.

Do you guys wanna go ahead and get a thread started? I think we've got enough interest and I took a short video yesterday as well (lost 6-7) and just need to upload it.

Before we do, just to clarify the rules: (some rules are taken from the poll thread, going by majority vote)

Race to 7 (to keep the video length manageable and watchable, any objections?)
Break, take ball in hand and try to run out
9-ball rules (hit lowest ball first, flukes count)
Runout or early 9-ball (combo/carom) is a win for you
Miss or foul is a win for the ghost
9 ball on the break only counts in the side and head pockets (9-ball made in the either of the foot pockets spots up)
Cue ball fouls only
No restrictions on racking (magic rack, pattern racking are okay)

9-ball will be main game, but if that's too difficult/too easy for you, you can play a different ghost (6-ball, 10-ball, etc.) with the same rules and the scores will be listed separately by game.

Video uploads are not required to participate, but encouraged if you have the means to do so.

And contrary to what some people say, beating the ghost is not an easy task, especially for us amateur players, so I hope we can keep things positive and limited to encouragement, congratulations and constructive advice. And if it is easy for you, then post your video and let your play do the talking.

Playing the ghost is a good way to rate yourself, if you can run 9 balls 50%

Sorry, Allen, these threads rarely stay on point.

When it was suggested that you use the "honor system," what did this mean? With no video it may be like telling "fish stories" before it's over.

Beating the ghost is a good way to rate yourself, if you can run 9 balls 50% or more you're a "9", 8 Balls - 50% of the time an "8", etc.

Playing the 6 ball ghost is almost as difficult as the 9 ball ghost, it's interesting why.

Is there a thread with videos of members here playing the 6,7,9,or 10 ball ghost? If there is could someone post a link to it. I think we need a separate forum for videos like this.

Great idea.
I enjoy videos of us a great deal.
I enjoy putting faces to the names. I like seeing what we look like.
I really like how difficult we make the game look at times.
simple layouts becoming impossible at times
and sometimes impossible layouts becoming easy.
I can watch the pros run hundreds and learn.
but for pure entertainment, bring us on.
bring us on. There should be a Sticky for sure.

Are we going to be editing the first post every time someone posts a video?
That way when someone looks at it they can see who they want to watch play instead of looking through the whole thread?

Yes, that's how they do it in the straight pool high run thread. They start a new thread every year as well, so the old thread gets catalogued and everyone starts over again in January.

Do you want to be the editor? Is so kick this bad baby off. I'm gonna have to get to the pool hall and record a video.

I like this also. It keeps the thread well organized. Whoever starts the thread should be fairly responsible. Maybe update the first post once a week or so. I'd be happy to volunteer unless someone else want to do it:) We can include the end of 2014 in the 2015 thread as well, to give it a kick start with vacation time.

I'm fine with doing it, if you guys don't mind.
So are we allowing games other than 9 ball to be posted as well? I think it might encourage newer players who may not have a chance at beating the 9-ball ghost.

If so maybe make the title "2015 AZB Ghost Challenge - Official Thread"?

The thread is up, so let's get out there, take on them ghosts and get this thing going!

Score, MemberID, Date, Table Type, Pocket Size, Video Link

Maybe out beside this add.....Post #
This way people can go straight to it.
