how fast can you cut with the .015" into say Ebony?

we have the exact same setup, but have some trouble with the .015" breaking in Ebony.we had to slow it way down.

i go 6 inch a min .035 deep tomorrow night i have an inlay program 15k at 20 inchs a min it makes 10 passes watch it you will enjoy...lee
use air to remove the deris also as you cut thats a must.

At 50K RPM, I cut ebony at 7 ipm. I might do 3 depth cuts in ebony or cocobolo, but usually only 2. The only time I let a bit that small plunge completely is the very start of a pocketing toolpath. Otherwise, I make sure it only cuts on one side.
I make sure I cut as much as possible with bigger bits, and use the small ones ONLY for final passes. I step up to 12-15 if I'm making a final pass taking only a couple thousandths.

Sheldon, what spindle are you using? Can you use a 1/4" bit? Do you have any pictures?

thanks, jim.

how do you like the slot cutter?we use one of the straight 2 flute cutters on shafts, and the 6 flute for butts.cuts smoother than a saw blade when they are fresh.

Slot cutters work great. I can sand out a shaft in under 5 minutes, and take only a couple thousandths off after cutting. You need a very accurate mandrel, and the tips need to all be ground concentric, so that they actually all cut. Crappy mandrels and/or non concentric tips might mean you actually only have one cutting blade.
I usually use 3 wing cutters. I've been using the 2 in my cnc for a while though, because it is lighter.
