alright during the past couple of weeks i've run into 2 people with too really great hitting vikings. i've played with a couple of vikings before and i wasn't impressed at all. but during the month i had the chance to hit with a couple of different friends vikings and they hit exceptionaly well. one looked all cheap and crazy with a lion on the side or some thing but played lights out. is there a better series of vikings than another?

I've played exclusively with Viking cues since I started playing in amateur leagues in 2000. I purchased two from the VX series, and then another player and the jump/break from the F series. I'll be purchasing a couple more from the G series during the holidays.

Each time I decide to make a purchase I always borrow some cues from others to try some different makes...but I keep coming back to Viking due to the quality of the work and their consistency. I've played with 314, Z, X, red dot, black dot, and Southwest shafts...although I haven't tried any OB-1 since no one in my area shoots with them. Nevertheless, after I'm done experimenting I always end up purchasing another Viking. I find that they suit my game the best.

The Vikings all play the same up and down the line since the shafts are all contstructed the same with a 12-14" taper. Options include the joint style, taper style, and of course the tip...so it's possible that the differences you noticed were one of those options. I always go with Triangle tips and "A" style joints. Naturally it should go without saying that how the owner cares for the cue will greatly affect the hit as well.

Sometimes I use an old VX cue if I don't want to play with anything flashy, and it plays just as well as my F31 (G48) that I bought in 2007.

The answer is yes they can shoot different. What you have to remember is the cheap lion cue you were using is a wood to wood joint. (possibly the jaguar cue with the 8 ball at the bottom) Other Vikings are SS joints. If you shot with the wood to wood joint, then I would stay with the wood to wood joint. If it has a metal joint, then you might not like the hit of them! I too think the wood to wood joint of a viking plays great!

I love my VM28, and have a matched joint ring 314 shaft made up from me by Viking. I play almost every day with it.

I've had a couple Vikings and overall was happy with them. When I ordered a 314 for two of them, the F02 matched perfectly but the F43 was off by enough to notice.. while you would think they could do better, given both are 'production' cues, they really do mean it when they say you need to send in the butt for a perfect match.

I ended up selling the F02, I just really didn't like the feel of the steel joint. The F43, while significantly cheaper, has a much nicer feel (wood joint). But as always, opinions in these cases are mostly useless, as nobody ever 'feels' a cue the same as someone else will.

I have one of the VM series. I think it is a VM-39. I do not know what viking did but they gave me two amazing shafts...

one 11.75mm weighing 3.6 oz
one 12mm weighing 4.0 oz

and for some reason the 11.75mm plays stiffer than the 12mm. I wouldn't trade these two shafts for anything. They play so great and give me back to much feedback.

one of the best hitting cues I ever played with was an ugly orange Viking in about 87, it was a cheap cue then beat to hell but wow it was a great cue, i offered to buy it-i borrowed it for action-i won. the guy wouldnt sell it he knew he had something special, as for the rest of the Viking cues I have played with they are fair to good not great.

I had a Viking cue for over 25 years, then gave it to my daughter. I played every game with it including 3 cushion. I even use to take it to some of the local bars that had the big ass mud ball. It was only 19 oz but seemed to hit heavier than that yet had a nice touch/feel to me. The shaft is still straight today. Well maybe I should ask to see it next time I'm at her house, she's kind of a wild child. Johnnyt
