Visiting Chicago: City Pool Hall?

I'm in town this week (first time) and it looks like I'll have some free time Thursday evening. City Pool Hall is reasonably close to my hotel. Can anyone share their thoughts about the place (equipment, atmosphere, food, etc)? I don't have my cues with me, so the house cue quality would be especially of interest.

Assuming no one waves me away from the place, anyone want to get together and play?

Food & Drink - Very good bar food, reasonably priced for the area, large portions.
Tables - 6 9' Gold Crowns (Table one is shimmed and is the "owner's table", not necessarily open to the public), and 3 8' Gold Crowns. They keep the tables in pretty good condition.

Important information - They run leagues there M-Th, and all or most of the tables will be in use from about 6 pm to Midnight on those days. Also, depending on what you're used to, table time could be considered "steep." I believe it's about $16/hr during the evening.

Another option not too far by is G-Cue Billiards. Similarly priced to City Pool Hall, but they don't have leagues, so you shouldn't have trouble getting a table. Food and drink there is average bar food. Tables are Gabriels, which play similarly to Diamonds.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's very useful information! G-Cue looks close enough, so I may head that way instead. Thanks for the heads up!

Accurate post. Just FYI, the owner of CPH (Phil) passed away suddenly last year, so Table 1 is no longer set aside. Phil's sister is running the place, and she doesn't play pool at all.

To the OP...both rooms have good food and good equipment. GCue is a little more upscale. You probably won't find any action at either room, but finding someone to play with should be easy. Both have decent house cues.

Hey RakRunr, if you have any spare time, take a cab up to Chris's Billiards on N. Milwaukee. It's worth the trip just to see the place. If you go, walk around and look at all the billiards memorabilia on the walls in every room!
