Thanks Dave I appreciate that.
Chad did give me a stern talking to James. Ha, Chad doesn't have a mean bone in his entire body. You'll never meet a nicer guy and except when you draw up against him. Then there is no mercy. Not too many can beat him on the table. Most get to sit in the hot seat and watch a run out.
They were a little short handed in the ref department as many were also playing and could only put in short periods of time on the floor.
That turned into one ref for 48 tables for much of the draws. I was zig zagging back and forth between both sides. I generally make sure other than the shooter, that I also turn to his opponent and let him know what the call is but in being in a hurry, I called and walked away not confirming the call
to James. Thats was my fault. It was a very close call and I could see that
Jim might have thought it was a foul from where he was standing. That call made me feel bad and I apologized to James later when I had a chance. He was very cool with it. It was a close hit and I had to make a decision based on where the cue ball and object balls ended up. Yet, like I said, I can see where Jim would have thought that was a certain foul.
I put in 25 hours on the floor in 3 days. It was a great experience. That was the purpose of me taking the ref course in Vegas, was to be able to help ref at a large tournament. I made more calls in my first shift on Thursday night than I normally do in an entire year here.
The other refs knew I was green on the floor and they helped out much.
Really good for ones confidence level. I think for the most part, my calls were fair and accurate.
There were a few close ones that could have gone either way but if I saw the shooter was making an effort to do the shot correctly, I gave him the benefit of the doubt most times unless it was a clear cut foul.
One thing I found funny is when a shooter feels the need to use a jump cue to do a 45 degree shot. Specially when the balls weren't frozen.
From what I saw, I think a phenolic tip can be detrimental in some cases to you fouling or not. Most times I found the shooter fouling when using a jump cue.
The only problem I had was a team that had placed a Master in the roster. We got to the bottom of it, the player got his games zeroed out.
There was a drunken knob that was harassing the offending team. I told him that he had no dog in the hunt and the team had taken their lumps and were entitled to finish out the match. I had to be unbiased altho if I had not have had a shirt on, my opinion would have changed.
The drunk was loud enuff to be disrupting players at other tables so I had to shut him down.
I didn't get to watch James shoot but he was still there until late Sat night so I imagine he is a pretty strong player himself.
Sheila and I got to play a few games Sat or early Sunday after everything was over. She wacked me 13 zero. What, did I just start playing pool or something?
Thursday, when I got in, I knew Grace as soon as I saw her.
Very good to meet her. She is tireless. She worked the cue raffles and was on her feet from early morning until late at night. I would have been sleeping on my feet.
