Hey everybody,

This is Austin Murphy. I'm using my Dad's AZ account to post this. I just wanted to let you know that I would love the opportunity to play in the next IPT challenge match. I'm only 14 years old but I've been hittin' em pretty well lately. Recently at the Reno Bar table 9 ball tournament I was ahead of SVB 7-6 in a race to 9 and had some great opportunities to get a big win but couldn't quite close it out. I'm really focusing on pool now and playing a challenge match like this would be one more step in gaining the experience I need to reach my goal of being the number one pool player in the world. I'd like to ask you to give me a vote on the IPT website. You can vote twice every day until April 9th. You will need to register as a basic member on their site but it is easy and free to do so.

If you are a premium member you can vote up to 10 times per day. I'm asking my family and friends to vote for me also so I hope to start showing up in the top 20 soon. I understand that most of you have your favorite players already and will probably vote for them. That's cool, I understand.

Sincerely,
Austin Murphy

hey man, i'll send a few votes your way for coming on here and asking - I've never seen you play but part of me doesn't want to because it would be depressing for me. :( only 14 years old and you play better than i ever will! :D

anyways good luck - hope you haven't left it too late in coming on here!

Hi Austin!

I watched you play at the US Bar Table Championships 2-3 years ago. I remember watching you play a match against Dennis Orcullo and losing 9-7 but you played well. One of the things that impressed me (and I was also quite amused by this) was that you kept checking Orcullo's racks. You also faired well against some other strong players in that tournament if my memory serves me correct.

You have a vote or two coming from me:) . Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks worriedbeef and hilla hilla for your support. Getting the chance to possibly play in the challenge match would be incredible and would give me the opportunity to get a huge win. Every vote counts!

Got My Vote

Austin, You Are Playing Very Well Right Now, And You Deserve To Play In One Of The Challenge Matches, Good Luck And We Will See You At The Jointed Cue Next Weekend.

Austin, I am also going to give you a vote or two because I like you and the sport needs more young players like yourself. I do need to say also that you need to be careful if you get voted in to play. You would be on a double edged sword, meaning if you win you are going to be shot into the limelight among people who don't know who you are and you will get huge props from all in the billiards community. the other side of the blade is if you lose against Morris, Archer, SVB etc people are going to have the oppinion that you are too young and should not have been there in the first place. Having said that I really want you to get the votes you need and I really would like you to play well and win. The last time I played you You spanked me 11 to 5. I saw you beat some really good players in that event also. Anyway, good luck.

Hey, I'm in the top 20!!

Hey its Austin. Thanks everbody for the votes. It looks like it's working. I was very excited this morning when I saw that I made it into the top 20. I'm currently at #19. It sure would be cool to keep moving up all the way to #2 so I can play the challenge match. I'm ready and willing to play anyone but would especially like to play Efren Reyes, Johnny Archrer or Earl Strickland.

Not exactly vote getting numbers there little man.

Thanks for your opinion runout all over you, but that was two years ago when I was twelve and now I'm fourteen. I agree with you that the numbers are not impressive and even I believe that, but now that two whole years have gone by I have been playing a substantial amount of pool and would love the oppurtunity to play against the top dogs in the world. If I am going to be number one in the world, I have to start somewhere. No pain no gain.

Austin, I can appreciate your love of pool and your playing ability, and this is probably not going to be a poplular opinion, but at the age of 14, I think you should be concentrating on your school work. At your young age, you don't belong in a big money challenge match and I'm surprised that your father allowed you to start this thread. This is JMHO.

Come back in 7 or 8 years, after completing your education, and I will be glad to vote for you as much as possible.

A good education

Hey Rich,

Thanks for looking out for me. I too believe that a good education is very important. My dad would not have let me start this thread or play in the challenge match if I was not doing well in school. I just got my report card a week ago and had straight A's. I'm intersted in attending UCLA, Stanford or Yale.

I am putting half of the prize money I win in pool into CD's, stocks and mutual funds. I will use this for my college education.

Austin

In Austin's defense he shouldn't had ever been allowed on a professional tour. Like many of the people "picked" by the IPT. I think this is so obvious I shouldn't even have to state it, but because of this thread I must. Is it a shock that so many non-IPT pro "qualifiers" absolutely dominated the original picked "pros"? It shouldn't be. A lot of those pros were not professional players to begin with.

It was so absurd when the Siegel Efren match happened that KT promoted it as, half of the people think Mike is the greatest player, and Half think Efren is. At that point in their careers it OBVIOUSLY wasn't even close and the match reflected that.

When the IPT picked their "pros" it was very much the same naivete. People who had no buisness being on a pro tour were allowed to play, Linda Carter? Bernie Friend? Austin Murphy is absolutely no exception to that list. It just happens to be an unfortunate side effect of letting people who do not really understand the professional pool world to pick pool "pros." Its an absolute travesty.

I have been around Austin and his parents quite a bit and can address a couple of concerns that have been voiced.

First, the kid can play. He may not be the favorite against most male pros but I guarantee they don't have to like it. He will make them work for that win if they are able to pull it off and he snaps off the victory himself often enough. In my opinion his level of play was not at the norm in the couple of IPT events for some reason, so they are not a true indication of how well he really plays. For example, in various tournaments he has beaten Bobby Hunter (former world champion), Gabe Owen (former US open champion), gone 9-7 with Dennis Orcollo (arguably the best player in the world), gone 9-7 with Shane Van Boening (also arguably the best player in the world), and has also beaten other pros and been right there with still others. He also won the BCA nationals two years in a row for his age group.

Second, he and his parents have their priorities straight. Education is the most important thing to Austin and his parents. Austin is an excellent student. Austin's parents do not allow him to gamble, and as previously stated, at least half of everything he wins in tournaments is invested wisely for his future education. I have no doubt that if he did not maintain those high grades that his parents would curtail his pool playing activities. One or both of his parents are also always with him at all times while he is competing at various tournaments as well. He would make a fine addition to the IPT challenge match series.

Its just a shame he couldn't do any of that when it actually counted. That like a bar bangers excuse, I haven't played in a while, dude are you serious????

Ps the fact that he cant play with the best is not an opinion bozo its a fact.

You know,, you coulda just said "No thanks. I'll pass" (or just shut up all together)

But instead you decide to tell a 14 yr old kid that he just isnt good enough when all he was asking for is a vote.. and not a crtique of his game...

And then you call somebody a "bozo"..... who calls somebody "Bozo"... LAME... are you sure you arent the kid in this thread..???

Bozo? What are you, 10?

I did say that he was not favored against most male pros didn't I, or is your reading level at age 10 too?

He has done it when it counted many times. Do you think that the many other tournaments he has played in did not count? Like every other player, he apparently is not at the top of his game in every single tournament he has entered. Name somebody that is.

The fact of the matter is that he is not pro level, but he can and does play with the best and hangs right in there, and even gets some victories (as you can see by some of the results I posted or if you checked some of his tournament results, again if you bothered to read). Odds are he would be a favorite over you, and I can say that without even knowing how you play.

No, pretty sure, im not the kid. Not the kid when I run out 3 or 4 rack in two tournaments, when Im asking for a vote above people who have ran 40 and 50 racks. Yeah pretty sure im not the kid when all you can do is be upset at me for setting the record straight. Havent heard too much oh man, you are so wrong, because he is the best and you should vote for him because of that reason, and you should also leave him alone for that reason. Why have I not heard that? Because Austin Murphy came on here and posted a thread for us to vote for him. He simply does not deserve to be voted for, not by a long shot. If he is old enough to go out of his way to sell us his vote, he should be old enough to handle..."You aren't even close to being good enough." The numbers (not the promise) speak for themselves.

By the way I think we all know he would be absolutely embarrassed by a real pro on the internet I dont want to see that, no matter how much the kid thinks it would be "cool"
