this pool hall was about 20 minutes from my house. it was closed like all other places because of the virus. i kept calling the phone number to see when they were going to open, as they had i thought 10 valleys and 4 diamonds, all 7 footers, which is what i play on.

finally got a answer when i called, and the owner said he was opening on saturday at noon. i have to admit i was pretty happy, as i was hoping this place could be my new place to practice and play. ( as i had heard that HARD TIMES WAS CLOSING) and this pool hall was about 5 minutes from hard times in bellflower ca.

and pool was only 6 bucks a hour for a single player. pretty cheap.

so i walked in sat right at noon when they opened, and it was like a sauna inside. im like WTF? so i got a set of balls and went to what i thought were valley bar tables, but they were GLOBAL tables, which i had never heard of????

and these table were filthy, i mean dirty. the first table i went to the rails were almost black!!!! i picked a table that was the least dirty, and only played for 30 minutes. it was pretty nasty. as i walked out to pay i looked at the 4 diamond tables, and they were just as nasty. unbelievable. i was in a full sweat, out 6 bucks, and never going back.

i guess i will have to pay 9.50 a hour at my home pool hall, but at least the place is clean. :frown::frown::frown::frown::frown::frown:

Bummer, but you’re talking to the wrong people. Gotta talk to them. I hope they shape up. Nice to have a place, close by. Good luck

Just grab a practice partner and split the time. As your competitive juices start flowing, maybe play
for table time, or not. It doesn’t matter because paying the 1/2 the hrly rate is better than the full rate.

You can set up a practice curriculum and play matches in all the games, 8 or 9 ball, 10 ball, 14.1 etc.
And it will be accomplished paying only 1/2 the tab unless you gamble and the winner plays for free.

Wow, $9.50 an hour? Is there never a day rate? There is a very nice pool room here, near New Orleans that has all Brunswick Gold Crowns and Diamonds (9 foot tables), and they have an all day flat rate rate (10 am until 6 pm), where you can play all day for $6.

And this other place, near Buffalo's is only a $1.00 per hour to play.

Jamie?

Is that you?
Nah. Disparate styles.

Usually carom players are picky about the equipment, as in the balls are cleaned and the table vacuumed after each match in some rooms. I saw one mostly carom room where if you scratched the nose of a rail with your finger nail, it came away filled with grease and perhaps other things. The tables played a little short. ;) I did not return.

Sounds like you are in Florida ( I know you're not) but since I moved here 2 years ago, mostly I see "rooms" that are really dive bars on one side ( usually with food) and a "room" on the other side. The "room" is filled with the worst tables possible in terms of condition and maintenance. Gandys, Victors, some old GCs, for the 9 footers; all never cleaned, wild rails, etc. Truly a disaster for any serious player. The owners down here have mostly no concern about billiard equipment or the game itself. Most pool is just about free; it is all about the booze sales.

Sounds like you have never been to Diamond Billiards in Cape Corel. 11 Diamond 9' Pro-AM's and 8 Diamond 7 footers. Tables are not sterile clean, but they make a legitimate effort to maintain them.

They just re-opened several weeks ago. Last year they decided to go non-smoking, but upon re-opening they reversed that decision and went back to allowing smoking. They claim the non-smoking decision really hurt the business. Regardless of your position on smoking, I completely understand their actions in doing what's best for their business.

Good to see them back in action.

I am near Tampa and have been wanting to check out Diamond. It's disappointing they've gone back to smoking but I can't fault their decision. A few rooms up here have gone to non smoking when reopening after the shutdown. We'll see if their business holds up.

Cleaning Rails

Doesn't help filthy cloth of course but I usually clean the rails myself in smoking establishments or if there is a lot of chalk and powder on them. Just keep the damp paper towels from washing hands in the bathroom and and a couple dry ones. Won't work when a place has an air dryer but places with nasty tables seem to all use paper towels too.

I have been there- only decent tables in SW Florida- that's my point only one place in a radius of about 200 miles with decent tables. those Diamonds, by the way, are the OLD red label tables that have not been updated. Bank short, pockets play way stiff.
