Hanging around with pool players you may never learn that Walter Tevis wrote anything other than The Hustler and The Color of Money. He did, and very well:

You might recognize The Man Who Fell to Earth as the scifi movie that David Bowie starred in.

I just finished Mockingbird (thanks to 1 Pocket Ghost), which I recommend. Here's a synopsis from Wikipedia:

Mockingbird (Doubleday, 1980), set in a grim and decaying New York City of the 25th Century. The population is declining, no one can read, and robots rule over the drugged, illiterate humans. With the birth rate dropping, the end of the species seems a possibility. Tevis was a nominee for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1980 for Mockingbird. During one of his last televised interviews, he revealed that PBS once planned a production of Mockingbird as a follow-up to their 1979 film of The Lathe of Heaven.

It's not just pool players that ignore his other works. I just checked our library system and the only things they have are.... The Hustler and the Color of Money. I'm surprised - I thought they would have more by Tevis.

I have the Queen's Gambit and have read it many times. Tevis was a truly gifted writer with amazing insight into the human soul. It's one of my few keepers as far as books go.

I watched The Man Who Fell to Earth with David Bowie in it (I think) and didn't get it. I need to read the book.

It's a great book, and Walter Tevis was world class writer. He battled the bottle his whole life, thus his output was minimal, considering his abundant skills.
