Wanna Know What I Think Of The Derby City Classic?

You missed a great opportunity Joey. Tom Ferry “Old Has Been”, was my friend. He was a hard hustler in his early years and damn good at it. He told people he was a hustler, it wasn’t his fault if they didn’t believe him. Later in his life he chose to help young pool players with less knowledge than himself. Tom was one of, if not the, top poster on this board. One year before Tom died he asked me to write his obituary for AZ and OP.Org. He had found out he had a terminal blood disease. Yet within that last year he found the strength to not only play in but to win the MO state 9 ball tournament, beating in the finals another good friend of mine, Chuck Raulston. I have heard the AZB/OP.ORG room at the DCC will in the future be known as the Tom Ferry room. I miss my friend.

Jay Helfert told me he knew Tom Ferry for 30 years but by the name Tom Martin. Said they played but after two games quit due to "too much see saw"

Good to see how the room started

Looks like WBM has been a key part of the room from it inception as he initially contacted Greg about the room

Myself, I wish there was a little more action to sweat in the AZ / Tom Ferry room.

Next year I hope there is more action if only in memory of Tom

I had heard that line before, Jack. Still very funny. Elvicash, is right. There should be more action in the AZ/Tom Ferry room. Tom would have loved that.

I too have known Old Has Been for over 30 years. Tom Didn't play Buddy's speed but was always the favorite to get out on schedule. I first met Tom in Memphis in the mid 70s and he was going by the name Tom Martin then. Tom used quite a few last names. Tom was down with Cotton LeBlanc and I liked Cotton's end so I bumped the rail a touch. Didn't take but a couple of hours and Cotton was tapped. I was pretty close to it myself. That rail action saved me money though because I couldn't beat Cotton so Tom's action with me was knocked for ever.

Tom and I became good friends here on AZ when we found out who each other were. The Memphis episode was laughable 30 years later and Tom could easily make you laugh. Tom called me one morning, told me to watch what he was going to pull on the AZ youngsters. A couple of hours later I checked his post and couldn't stop laughing. Tom started a thread about the greatest substance ever found to manufacture cue tips, elephant foreskin. Tom raved about how a cue tip made of elephant foreskin was 10 times better than any Moori tip. He said the only problem was the cost. He said they were so expensive that only top players used them.

Tom got a ton of the guys here that lived on Tom's every word to beliving they could play top speed if only they had an elephant foreskin tip.

One of the funniest guys I have ever known.

Very cool story. I had an old (both age and time I have been building cues for him) customer having me track down camel hair tips. Swore that he had used one years ago and didn't want any but them. Researched it high and low and didn't get any feedback from any cuemakers about them - no one had heard about them - except one who said he vagely remembered something about them being used in asia. So maybe Tom had something there!!!! At least he had them thinking about it.

This is a photo of Tom at his 60th birthday party with his wife, Rita and their two children. He loved his family so much.
