I have a older Schon in great shape, from the early 90s, 6 points, and an Ariel Carmeli, almost new, in great condition, I want to trade for a good playing cue which I can keep a long time. I am going to the DCC next month. Do the cue traders out side in the lobbies give you a fair deal or should you stay away from them because they are trying to make a bundle on a trade. I just want a fair deal for both of us, don't want to take advantage of anyone but don't want to be taken advantaged of either. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance

It is really a matter of what is "fair". If you have cues (unfortunately, like you have here) that the cue dealers can buy wholesale for a LOT less than you gave for them, they are not going to offer you anywhere near what you will probably feel is a good deal. Case in point, if they can buy a new Schon and Carmelli similar for yours for 40-50% off retail new, what do you think they will be willing to give you for your used equipment?

Other side of the coin, is that if you have a rare, collectible cue with a high demand that they would have difficulty getting for a discounted price (IE, original Balabushka, Szamboti, etc), they will try very hard to make you a real fair offer.

You just need to test the water. I don't how how good of a trade you can get but you'll sure find a lot of cues. Their will be plenty you want to trade
for. I swap around every year and I believe I've always got the worst of it. Buying straight out I've made some pretty good deals.

To me it's kind of odd; but you say you need a good playing cue which you can keep a long time... not to put you on the spot; but what is wrong with the schon that you don't think you will be able to use if for a long time? I've had a schon for years and it plays great and will probably keep and put it in my Last Will and Testament.
 
Just sell them on here and take the money down to DCC and buy yourself a cue,money works better then trades most of the time,just my 2 cents.
 
I like the schon, it is just too heavy, it must weigh over 20 oz. and I like about 19, I have tried taking the bolts off the butt, but then there is nothing to hold on that end piece. I will try and take some pictures and post them, not sure how to do that but I will try tonight. I just thought I could do better if I traded them. I think I would like to have 1 stick worth 1000-1300 then two sticks worth 500 and 700. That was my reasoning. If I can't sell or trade them, I will continue to play with the schon. The carmeli, I bought at the DCC in 2005 and just never played any better with it then I did with my 95-12 Meucci. The truth is I play better with my Meucci that I have had for 10 years then I do with either one of my custom cues. Thanks for replying.

If the cue feels heavy you can alway send it to a cue mechanic. Most guys know how to lighten the weight of a cue. If anything, speak to schon themselves; they may lighten the weight of the cue for no fee depending on the cue. All you would probably have to do is pay for Shipping and Handling. I'm not going to tell you what to do exactly; but whatever makes you happy is the way to go.
