Wanted info/reviews on chalk holders? Qpod & etc

I've been using one of these for a couple of years and I don't see any drawbacks at all.

https://www.seyberts.com/products/Leather_Pouch_Chalk_Holder-102652-73.html

I liked the one that "Aurora" an AZBer made but they no longer make them because the machine broke. I've seen this one because I've been looking for a new pouch but don't want the ones that have the printing in bold gold ink across the front. In fact, I don't want any printing or engraving on the pouch. I want a "work pouch", not a pretty pouch.

The thing that I worry about with "your" pouch is that the chalk will come flying out when I break or fall out when I bend over to tie my shoes, etc.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated because I really hate dropping my chalk on the floor.

I had gotten very used to using the soft leather pouch and now that I am using Predator chalk, I would like to keep it and keep it handy. Right now, I am pouchless. No little Joey.

Joey:

How about a cheapie belt-clipped (or belt-looped) cell phone holder from your friendly neighborhood dollar store?

Something like this, with a magnetic flap that easily opens and closes:

mbvgLJbh6hD9Fpdk5JGNGdw.jpg

Get the "long" version (that clips to your belt lengthwise) rather than the "tall" version. This way, you have a wide aperture to reach your hand into, and not have to dig deep down into a deep pouch.

Before I got my magnetic chalk holder from ChalkShark, this is what I used to use with great success!

-Sean <-- and best of all, at the dollar store, the price is right! :D

Maybe, but I don't think I want to open a flap to grab a piece of chalk. Still I might try it if I run across one.

Sean,
Wait a minute. rare Earth neodymium magnets? Generally they are powerful magnets, not like anything I have seen previously in a chalk holder.

Does the chalk ever fall off of the magnet since you have been using it? LIke when breaking etc.

Reading some more about this chalk holder, I see that it only exposes 1/8" of the chalk from the holder. The holder is what sticks to the magnets correct? The photos don't detail it very well, imo..

Thanks,
JoeyA

Which one does Max Eberle use?

I need one of those magnetic ones, I think. I CANNOT put anything IN my pocket. I think something that just magnetically clips to your belt or pants-line would work.

This might sound stupid, but what's the benefit of chalk holders?

I don't usually wear a belt and I don't put my chalk in my pocket, that will cause an angry wife syndrome. :o

I see ones with small sticks, I don't know why or how they can be used. :sorry:

this works for me

euro chalk holder and end of old cue

Then just cut the flap off with a pair of sharp scissors, and use a black sharpie to blacken the cue edge?

Joey, I'm assuming you switched gears and are now discussing the chalk holder I use (ChalkShark), not the inexpensive cell phone belt holder I suggested.

Yes, the ChalkShark natively has two rare earth neodymium magnets -- one inside the belt holder, the other at the bottom of the rubberized holder/housing that holds the chalk.

I don't use the rubberized holder/housing at all. I just glue a small patch of steel -- e.g. the round knockouts from electrical boxes (that you pry out with a screwdriver to fit conduit or armored cable), or a small square cut out from a tin can -- glued directly to the bottom of the cube of chalk.

I found I don't need the strength of two magnets (it's too much, actually). The bond between one magnet (inside the belt holder) and the patch of steel glued to the bottom of the chalk cube is definitely enough to firmly hold it.

Plus, with no walls of that rubberized holder to get in the way, it allows me to completely use the cube of chalk, all the way down to the height of about 1/4-inch (any less than that, and the worn-down chalk itself is brittle enough to break). Then, I simply throw it away -- the small patch of steel has served its purpose and is a "throwaway item" to me. I go get a new cube of chalk, another electrical box knockout (or cut a small square from the bottom of a soup or coffee can), and glue it with either polyurethane glue or Barge cement. (This cement, btw, is the cement used by table mechanics to glue the cushions onto rails, etc. It's extremely strong, and no, the strength of the rare earth magnet does not rip the bit of steel away from the bottom of the chalk cube.)

I hope that helps explain it?

Best,
-Sean

The stick end goes in your pocket.

Sean,

Yes! This explains everything perfectly and more. I don't like the idea of having my chalk inside of a holder where the chalk is only exposed 1/8" and you have to move the chalk as you wear it down. Your idea of gluing a piece of metal to the bottom of the cube of chalk sounds PERFECT. I like to feel the chalk in my fingers, especially when I apply it. The holders remove some of that feeling. I guess I just don't like the bulk that the rubberized housing/holder adds to the chalk diameter.

I have a powerful magnet the diameter of a dime and 1/4" thick, on my desk and will probably try and glue that to the bottom of a piece of chalk if your idea doesn't satisfy my particularism for chalk holders.

THANKS!

The stick goes into your pocket. The chalk cube is exposed and hangs.
Grab the chalk and the stick pulls out. Just slip it back into your pocket.
I like the chalking stick inside my front pocket instead of a back pocket.

Hi Joey:

Re: second paragraph -- the problem with gluing the magnet to the bottom of the chalk is that once you wear down the chalk, you now have to either throw it away, or else try to remove it from the bottom of the chalk and scrape/clean it up for reuse. I'd put the magnet side on your belt (perhaps make your own beltclip and glue the magnet to that), and put the disposable bit of steel on the chalk cube's bottom.

Just an idea for better ROI. ;) Once you do this, though, you'll ask yourself how you got along so far without it -- it's that convenient!

I always use my own chalk and other people have no issues swiping them the minute I put the chalk back on the rail. The chalk holder prevents that. I also always have my chalk within reach so I can easily chalk my tip if I think I need too. Sometimes if the chalk is on the other end of the table or even missing from the table I can't do that.

I expect to get some chalk on me during a game. If nothing else from the felt. So my hand is about all I ever have needed. I do have a holder, with the cube tied to a stick with a string. It has a kamui chalk in it. Only use it on my break cue, stays in my bag till I need it. I use it ONLY to save myself confusion not to keep my hands clean or keep track of the chalk.

On top of that, having the chalk "on your person" helps with a standard PSR, instead of having to take your eyes away from the table layout, visually locate the chalk, then go to that side of the table to fetch it, which can be considered somewhat of a distraction.

For me, just reaching down to my belt to grab the chalk is muscle memory. What's funny, is that on those rare days when I don't have my chalk holder with me (e.g. on business trips where I don't travel with my cue case and I'm in a foreign pool room "playing off the wall"), is reaching down to my belt, only to find the chalk is not there. Then doing a "coulda had a V8" palm-to-forehead motion remembering the chalk is on the rail. :D

This is what I do as well. I epoxy a washer to the bottom of the cube. One thing I found though is that it works better if you cut off the paper on the bottom of the cube then glue the washer.

Do you mean like this:
picture.php

I had this old telephone belt clip, these two Neodymium Magnets sitting on my desk not being used and glued one of them onto a piece of Predator chalk this morning. Maybe the small one is not strong enough because the chalk can separate just by brushing it lightly. Anyway, it's a million dollar idea.
Thanks,
joey

I got one of these a few years ago for like $2.60 shipped from Singapore. My favorite chalk holder that I've ever had, and I've tried many different kinds.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnetic-Billiards-Pool-Cue-Chalk-Holder-W-Belt-Clip-/390469128034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae9c60f62

I hang it off my back pocket so it doesn't turn the inside of my shirt blue from being on my belt.

I was wondering how tight your chalk holder holds the chalk? Does it EVER fall off of the magnet?

If I have to, I will just order a soft leather pouch from England. That worked good for me. Still willing to try other ideas. Just don't want the chalk to fall off the magnetic holder.

See "Chalk On A Stick" from Muellers for $9.00 among other places.

http://www.muellers.com/SearchResult.aspx?searchPhrase=chalk%20holder

I use about one cube every six months and have had this tool for many years. Table chalk is usually worn with a hole from grinding. this tends to get chalk all over my ferrule.

With a chalk holder in my pocket the chalk is always there, I don't have to search for it. I chalk before every shot and now it is natural to drop my hand to my pocket and the chalk is in my hand. The "stick" is easy to drop back in my pocket with no chalk mess on my hands or clothes.

After a few years of use I found the leather stretched and the chalk was loose in the holder. Now I wrap tape around a new piece of chalk until it is snug.

After about five years of use I suppose I need a new one.

For me, chalking the stick while I sight the next shot is part of the pre-shot routine and it is always there and always in the right place.

In the past I have bought these as presents for friends and usually have a couple around the house. When I am without Chalk On A Stick my rhythm is messed up,

I have seen where a few people have replaced the stick with a bullet or some other trinket. personally, I just use it the way it comes.
