Wanted: Pool Training Materials

Hi,
I'm pretty new to pool and looking for some training materials. Got some books you are through with? CD? DVD? The Training By The Number Method (by aramith)? anything showing how re-tip cues and other maintenance. would really appreciate something. Let me know what you got. Thanks, 83
 
Probably the greatest training video that all players own the the 60 minute workout by Bert Kinister...gauranteed to improve your game.
 
Arrange a private lesson w/a good instructor. There are several schools, and several quality instructors that post on az.

Books by Robert Byrne are excellent and plentiful. Check ebay or Amazon.

You can go here - http://www.easypooltutor.com/ They have all kind of lesson materials and they are free. Good luck with your training.

I don't like to post a competitors site but in this case I really don't consider EPT a competitor. It is just a different kind of site.
 
I've only ever used 1 training aid/device/book etc. And, it made a WORLD of difference. On a global 1 to 10 scale, it took me from a 4 to a 6 very quickly. He's kinda an oddball to watch, but he delivers the goods!!! For me, it was his 'Advanced Volume II', and that was back in the early-mid 90's.

Lessons in 9 Ball

We have one of the best instructors/coaches right here on AZ and luckily he just put out a VERY good step by step book on 9ball. And, you can harrass him through PM's! heh. :D

Scott Lee is a professional instructor with many years experience. He travels the country giving lessons and seminars. Send him a pm and he'll arrange to meet up with you the next time he swings through Montana. In fact, up until a few months ago he lived in Billings/or was it Bozeman?. You might also check with the well known cue maker and champion player Jack Madden, who also posts here, and he lives in Montana so he might know of someone to help you.

If you live near Souix Falls you want to contact the Van Boening's and see if they know of anybody.. or pm JCIN on this site, or pm BigNasty, on this site.

Fatboy83: don't pay any attention of VonRhett's post above. He's just playing around and it's kind of an inside joke for posters that have been around a while. He's just insulting a guy that takes (and, imo, deserves) a lot of ribbing. Only the last line in the post is relevant. :) PM Scott Lee and/or Jack Madden. Your answers will be with one of them.

Also, since you are close to Souix Falls pm bignasty or jcin on this forum.

Hey there,

Actually, I think spending some time with a local Pro would be a great way to improve your game. Another thing (which I've not tried) is to have someone video tape your game....then reveiw and improve :)

Lot'sa folks here as well as myself have DVD's available!

Little Joe Villalpando has two DVD's which are excellent for cue ball control and for a kicking system. They are available at www.pooliq.netGreat stuff.

For retipping you're going to need quite a bit of equipment. Maybe better to start off getting it done in Souix Falls somewhere. I screwed up a couple of pretty decent cues trying to do it without the right equipment and training.

I think it was purt' near obvious that it was a joke, especially with all those little smiley faces! LOL

Training materials are OK, and sometimes they can help - especially with the mental aspects of the game. But just like you can't learn how to swing a golf club or drive a car by reading manuals, Pool must be experienced.

Watch good players - not the balls falling in - but their mechanics, their stance, bridge selection, table management, rhythm, pre-shot routine, etc. Try to emulate what you see.

Then, GET LESSONS FROM A PRO! A Professional Instructor can fix things before it's too late. Easier to teach the right way than to un-learn bad habits.

Good luck, and I hope this game brings you as many years of enjoyment as it has me.

Pro Lessons

There is a fellow up here in the North Woods who is really an excellent player and offers lessons (for a fraction of the cost at my Pub) :p

He will spend probably 2 or more hours with you the first time just trying to get a feel for your stroke/game/etc.

Most times he will give you a 1/2 dozen practice routines to practice and practice and practice.

Personally, I think you need a combination of hands on Pro supervision (similar to the above), maybe some good DVD's; and, then of course, some close supervision at my level -- more time at the bar tables.

IMHO, there is no better time spent than shooting/sinking some rocks on anybody's tables.

The PROS didn't elevate their game by sitting around talking about felt and tips.

my reply near the end has a simple do it yourself method if you don't want to invest in some of the specialized tools needed. Really you only need some gel type superglue, sharp razor blade(s), and various sandpaper grits. I've been doing my tips this way and it works great.
