Social Media

The best thing everyone can do is stay off that social media junk. Not just face book but twitter, etc. I know not everyone does but posting your pvt lives to the public opens up a can of worms. Not to mention employers are now using social intelligence to go back 7 years for people looking for jobs. A lot of the kids these days post what they think is harmless fun but when the time comes for employment it is going to be a different story. I have been saying this for years and I fear eventually it is going to get worse.

Now on topic, I hope SVB gets this resolved. Being one of the nicest people I have ever met in the pool world this is very sad for someone to do this.

The last website in the world I would ever ever ever ever ever look at or be a part of is Facebook. I understand its a good biz tool for some people. But far as me-Ignorance is bliss. I have never looked at that site one time.

hope SVB is ok, he is a good guy.

I HAD a facebook account and then an a--hole from my way past wanted to friend me, I closed it and even today think they still have my account somewhere. Bunch of BS, I have 735 friends; Sure you do.. In this world your lucky to have 3 real friends the rest are acquaintances that would leave you high & dry in a heartbeat... Facebook suxs more than E Bay/Paypal....

I avoided Facebook for a very long time for some of the reasons mentioned thus far. I was somewhat :bash:ed into joining by many as they felt it was an effective means to get the word out in regards to live streaming of pool -- something they knew I am very passionate about. Anyone that has ever seen my wall there can attest to the fact that my account is, "for the most part", strictly dedicated to that end. It has produced some good results, improved the hit count on many streams, and garnished some new stream links ... but it also has taken up lots of what little valuable time I have left on this "blue cue ball" (world) of ours.

Has it been worth it for me? In terms of promoting the aforementioned streams to lots of people in a timely and efficient manner: yes. In terms of being able to interact with "true friends/people I personally know": with a few exceptions -- no (I mostly use email, Skype, and the cell for that.).

Facebook is just another tool for me to accomplish an end which is, as mentioned, to promote our sport via the live streaming of same! I will continue to "primarily" use it to that end. If it stops producing results then I'm out of there!

It is a great tool for that cmbwsu and has worked well for you by the looks in that regard. Probably the fastest way to get the word out involving stuff like live streaming. Not meaning SVB or you, some just don't realise the consequences of posting their day to day lives like they do, and the kids doing it are not going to like what the future holds. It only takes a couple things posted even if they mean no harm to stir up a hornets nest.

Keep up the good work on the streams.

I can attest to those hornets nests on there for sure. It is here too and on many other forums I belong to for that matter. Part of life. People who stir up a hornets nest often get stung in the process!

Thanks for your encouragement.

Yep, you're right.

There are a few people from this board which are very funny how they throw out the "very good friend of mine" tag.

In fact I think one of them may be lurking now.

FB should change it from friending someone to tagging them or come up with a niche term. It is crazy to think someone has 5000 friends or 50k friends.

Everyone complains that you cant get the word out in the pool world. A game changing social networking medium comes along that allows near instantaneous notification of anything going on anywhere in the world and people are scared of it because they read some boogey man article.

If you are a cop, corrections officer or some other occupation where you need to maintain persec for the sake of you and your family's safety it makes total sense to stay off networking sites. It seems most of the people who are most vociferous about staying off them have no particular reason other than they are positive everyone on earth is waiting for the slightest opportunity to exploit the smallest piece of personal info. I admit it do make me lol.

For those unfamiliar with facebook....it only shows what you let it show. The facebook elfs dont put up your tax returns and social security info as soon as you sign up for an account. SVB got hacked because he uses his profile as a marketing tool and accepts all friend requests from everyone. Somewhere in there he got screwed by clicking something he shouldnt have.

Its just the internet man. It will be fixed. Dont put info on the net you dont want everyone on earth to have access to from now till the end of time and you dont have anything to worry about. Balance in all things.

Tell that to the Teens posting these days when they go looking for a job a few years from now. It isn't bad if used as you described for a purpose such as getting the word out about events etc. But when people don't know enough to keep their pvt lives pvt as times are changing it will make a difference. I have said this when social networking started, but then again it's like a gun, it takes the guy holding the trigger to pull it, no comon sense the bullet will fire and cause damage just like the enter button fires to social sites, no common sense in what you post, expect consequences in the long run.

I work online and have been online since the old school IRC days so I'm a bit old fashioned, I will stick to IRC, no tweeting my tweety for me. :D
