**WARNING:This thread is strictly for those that gamble pt.1**

I got into an arguement with a guy about this ....

If you've got a guy stuck for a decent amount(at least a nickel) and he wants to jack the bet,by at least a third or more; You should always agree to it.The way I see it,you are getting odds on the money. If you calculate the chances of him going from stuck to ahead(not good),you'd be a fool not to raise the bet IMO.

All of this of course depends on it you have his "real game" ..
Word of advice:If you think he's on the stall,he probably is .

Good shooting

If I like the game, then bet whatever. I dont see how people can shy away from a game if they KNOW they have the best of just b/c their opponent wants to raise the bet. Especially if I already have him stuck. JMO.

Isnt that the true definition of the classic hustle. Go on stall...jack the bet...win it back and then some.

You are under no obligation, as the winning player, to allow the bet to be raised. I think the only way you allow the bet to be raised is if you know the person you are playing against, know you have the best of it, or if you just want to gamble.

If you dont know the player, he/she is more than likely on stall and you run the risk of losing it all back quickly. Let them EARN their money back the way they lost it.

Also, there are very few circumstances where double or nothing is a good idea.

Make your opponent earn back the cash...you get to play more, they have to show their true speed for less money, and you gives you the opportunity to quit winner (yes, i said quit winner) if you know that you have been hustled.

Also, unless you are friendly with your opponent, it is my personal opinion that you can quit ANYTIME YOU WANT! If you have a regular match with someone or you are friends, you should set a time limit...let them know when you are going to leave.

Now I thought I was quite adept at probabilities and gambling odds but you have got me flummoxed on working out the mathematical or probability logic behind the figures in this post...... perhaps you can explain how you arrived at the apparent conclusion that "at least one third" is the crucial number for agreeing to or declining a proposed jack up in the bet. Why not one quarter or one half or one sixteenth?

Personally - I will only Jack a bet if the other person agrees to up it exactly 3 5/8 of the original bet. I have a very very secret formula that has been passed down to me from my great grand pappy.

I've pulled out my trusty "Do Not Gamble List" and added bomber's name...with a note of "Seriously flawed perceptions of gambling & gambling etiquette"

jack'n the bet

If I'm up and the person wants to jack the bet it's fine to a certain point.I'll give him and opertunity to win half his money back.Just like bomber said make him earn it back, you worked for it now let him work back for the cash. There's always the opertunity that if you double the best he walks as soon as he breaks even, now you have shit and are liable for half the table time this has happenes alot around here in atl.I watched a good friend try this and he went down in a blase of glory, his opinion was that he would win one sooner or later .Then he would quit.

Mosconiac,

If you are talking about "quitting winner"...thats why its called GAMBLING!!!!! and not called "lets pretend that we are gambling, but you give me a chance to win my money back in the end!"

I have never understood why "quitting winner" was such a bad thing. Thats kinda the damn point of it. If you want a chance to break even when I am ready to stop playing...then dont play me...ESPECIALLY IF YOU ASKED FOR THE GAME!

I prefer that a person who is stuck have to try and win their $ back the same way they lost it. Jacking the bet gives them a chance to get lucky and even up on the quick at my expense. **** that.

Hey, send those chicks in your avatar up to Carolina for the weekend. I'd like to teach them how to play my version of six ball.

They could all get the wild 8 .........and a half.........from me.:p :p

We have a local player here that has A LOT of money. He is very well known for trying to "highroll" players. I know this players capabilities so this could be a little off the point.

He will attempt to raise the bet enough to throw the other players game. So to me you need to keep what is owed to you already in perspective.

I dont consider betting in billiards to be the same as say pot odds in poker. So to me if someone is getting beat and they want to raise the wager a considerable amount they are either hustling or sharking.

Just my opinion, which isnt worth much:)

Unless

Unless I'm getting staked I will raise the bet. If I'm getting staked its up to them. But, I have alwayes heard make them get it back the same way they lost it.

I second that ....this kid needs to gamble a little ...then respond to posts like this......

good thread, keep it going!

This is a good thread. I can make my own lists of who to gamble with and who to fight shy of or be cautious with reading the replies.

Walt, After we play on table nine at Buff's I'll up the bet and move to a bar table to let you have a chance to catch up. Deal? :D :D :D
