warped shafts

i am having trouble shaping tips with a razor blade when they are warped, one side is cut a little lower than the other because of the shafts having a wobble in them. is there a way to minimize this? i have been using a tip shaper(cue cube) but that takes a while longer than using the razor blade. how do you guys shape your tips?

What I do is use a dial guage and make sure that the ferrule is running true regardless of how the rest of the shaft is turning. This should eliminate your problem.

lol.....that was my thought. sometimes a ferrule is a bit out of round, but you should still be able to trim it pretty easy. there is a youtube vid that shows how. unless your chuck is way out, then you have other problems you need to address.

You are chucking up on the ferrule aren't you? That is how a cut initially. Not quite what that vid shows. I use the razor after and move the cue forward to make room for the razor. You can place pieces of paper between ferrule and high side to get it close as well..

I've 'freehanded' them for a couple decades.

Not really scary at all.

But, I would advise you put the tip end thru a bearing block.

i chuck up 4 inches from the ferrule, make a few passes to trim side wall close to size and use razor blade to trim the rest. use the tool post and rest razor blade on it to shape the tip. i will try moving the chuck to the ferrule to try and eliminate most of the wobbling. if i had a camera i would take pics. and i dont have a dial indicator to make sure it is running true. this only happens on the very warped shafts though.

watched the video, will try moving the shaft back after trimming the sidewalls.
