Was this a good hit?

Stealing Spartan's picture, if it was a rail first hit, wouldn't the CB have gone approx in the direction of the arrow? Since it would have hit very deep behind the 3?

I think it's a foul (but impossible to judge on the spot), the white didn't go in the direction you drew because it had topspin after bouncing off the cushion, and it hit the 3 really full, so the cue ball path looks like a soft follow shot with a full hit.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know what Tyler was playing on this shot? Here is the beginning of the shot, it starts at 37.18 if the link does not take you right there. I'm thinking he was maybe trying to hit the 3 into the 8, leaving the 3 there, and get the CB behind the 10. What do you think?

I think you saw something very close to what he was actually trying to do. He just misjudged the kicking angle and hit the 3 thicker then desired. If the kick hits the 3 thinner. The 3 ends up at the center of the short rail with great spd to keep tight to the rail.

The other possibilities suggested equate to horrific APA SL2/3 level misses.

Oh, you thought he was trying to go rail first (kick), and across the face of the 3? I didn't see that. I thought he was trying to go ball first. His CB was very close to the rail, which meant a high inside tip position, which means the CB would swerve a lot. I think he misjudged the swerve amount and it swerved less than he intended.

Is this what you mean?

Bad hit. you can stop the video and see that the cue ball has passed the edge of the object ball and is frozen on the rail and the 3 has not moved yet. Then the cue ball catches it on the way out.
I don't think that can be determining solely from the video. Here are the 5 frames. You can get to these with the <> keys (no need to press shift, so its the comma key and period key).

I've come up with our answer, a new word.
Split-kick
Like a split hit goes to the shooter, the same should apply here.

I think the fact that the 3ball did not rotate upon its axis like it would if struck by the CB on its way to the rail is another indicator of a foul.
I understand how difficult the call must have been on the floor at that moment however.

While it does appear he's cueing a bit with inside, the shot was at a rolling pace so there's near to no spin that would induce a notable amount of swerve imo. We're talking new cloth conditions as well. More slide then swerve
Close... I'm sure it's the limitations of the sketching app your using, but the kick I'm suggesting wouldn't clip the outside edge like you've draw. It wouldn't be much different then what he actually did. Talking a 1/16" or so less contact to produce what I think was his intention.

That's a viable option indeed. Maybe I'm just giving Styer too much credit for accurate cueing...? However he could have developed the same leave by hitting the 3 down a parallel path to the rail, which would have allowed a much thicker hit of the 3. That could have even brought the 8 into the safe as an additional blocker.

I'm no pro, but have a delusion of expectation of what pros are capable of. Based on what I see in the clip. I think the kick safe was his play.
