Folks, I need some help. I will be in Washington D.C. for the first time this week and have no idea what the good pool rooms are. Anybody have any suggestions? I am not looking for any action, just a great environment...maybe someplace running weekly tournaments. Thanks for the intel!

Will you be only in DC or elsewhere?
How long for, there are a few tourneys going on thursday in Virginia,
First Break in Sterling, and Fast Eddies in Springfield both have tourneys on thursday.
Jam will have the best info though.

I will be in the D.C. area only. About 6 blocks from the White House, actually. Anything I can take a taxi, or metro to travel to is within range. Unfortunately I must leave Thursday morning as I have classes in the afternoon. Although the trip is school-related, I don't want to miss half my classes (2 on Thursday afternoon).

There ain't too much happening in METROPOLITAN D.C. However, Corey from D.C. may be able to steer you to a couple local tourneys within the city itself.

There is, in fact, a weekly $20-entry-fee 9-ball tournament almost every day of the week in the suburbs, but there is only one that is accessible by the subway (Metro). On Wednesday nights at Orange Ball in Rockville, MD, there is a tournament which usually attracts quite a few of the local pool folk. It is a non-smoking room with a full bar and restaurant. Orange Ball is located about 3 blocks from the subway station in the heart of downtown Rockville, MD. It begins at 8:00 p.m.

Depending on where you are staying, I would suggest that you do not be out on the streets and walking during the late night in downtown D.C.

Here's a rundown of the D.C. metro area weekly tourneys:

Jennie, it is time to edit your list. This place has been called Side Pockets for over a year now. :D

In DC proper, there are four places worth considering:

1) Buffalo Billiards (DuPont Circle): opens at 4, no action. Tables in good shape -- GCIII with Simonis. No tournament.

2) Atomic Billiards (Cleveland Park): Six 8' Gold Crowns. Also opens at 4. Good vibe, no action. Tournament Monday night at 6:30.

3) Cue Bar (U-Street): four 9' and one 8' GCs. Opens at 6. No action. Tournament Sunday night at 6:30 (This is the tournament I run, but I'm out of town this week -- tourney is still on, though.)

4) Bedrock Billiards in Adams Morgan: five 9' GCs, two 8', good feel, well-maintained tables, opens at 4:00 on Friday. A fair number of solid players hang out there regularly.

Good luck,
Cory

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to see as many as I can, but I suspect that getting around to more than one is going to be really tough considering my schedule. I think I will check out Bedrock first. Sounds like the best combination of 9' tables and environment. I will let everyone know how it was with another post here.

2 Down...

Well, I hit Cue Bar last night. It was reasonably nice as far as environment. Unfortunately all the tables were occupied and I was able to dine and tab out before any opened. I decided to head over to Bedrock Billiards as originally planned. It was more down to earth as far as decor. Very cozy. Not too many people there...big college scene. I was able to play for half of what Cue Bar would have charged. Too bad Bedrock had crappy Tee Shirts since I like to collect pool room apparel. All they said where (and I quote), "Bedrock." No graphics, not even that it was a billiards place, or that it is in Washington D.C. Oh well.

Cue Bar uses a flat rate, which sucks for playing by yourself; Bedrock is more expensive for two+ players, but cheaper for one. Too bad you didn't find any players there, there usually are a few (Albanians, in particular) there most nights. Sorry I messed you -- I was in Chicago shooting with Da_Poet and WuClan.

This tournament usually has some high end players, for example Keith McCready has been known to play in this one from time to time. Also, it is no longer called Champion Billiards, it is now called Side Pockets.
