water buffola horn???

I've seen a few cues with water buffalo horn ferrules, and I don't know if its been around or a new thing but has anyone played with it and how close to ivory does it play? I saw the whats in a case video of rodney morris and he says he likes them, but then again he is sponsored so I can't really take his word for it, any comments??

Every cuemaker that I know, says the same thing ,its porse.

Az member (Joey in cal) I would consider him a expert on ferrules.
Joey told me one time that he wouldnt install buffalo ferrules anymore.

Bob Colosi has a nice write up on the sonic differences between horn, bone and ivory. Granted it is geared towards guitars, but it might give you an idea as to how it would relate to cues.

This is what Desi2960 (Chuck) has to say about using antler.
Brent Hartman (BHQ) also uses antler and likes it.

Altho, you may like the dark color of water buffalo horn and not lighter material.

i have experminted with elk, moose ,and white tail antler. i like it all, i use elk for joint material. the elk i believe will not crack as bad as ivory and is much cheaper and i believe much more durable. color is the biggest problem with elk as most is not white, but a greyish color. you can find more white material in the white tail antler, but the larger pieces are harder to find.

I like the color variations in antler myself. I have a moose antler from this year that needs to be cut yet so will have to see how that turns out. If you decide on antler, there are a few guys in the Cue Maker forums that would probably help you out or it can be bought on EBay at times.

I couldnt get past the color of the water buffalo to really say. I like to be able to see my tip where it meets the ferrule when I shoot. Just a personal thing but I dont think it hit anything like ivory or antler. I have tried elk, white tail, ivory, water buffalo, walrus and wart hog tusks for ferrules and the water buffalo was the softest hitting to me. I have tried to find white water buffalo but have not found it yet. The water buffalo seems to be more fine hairs or strands where all the others are more like bone material. Hope this helps.
