I am considering driving up to Trevose this Sunday and checking out Fusco's pool room. Jose, who runs the Hampton Ridge Tour, puts on a first-class event, a level playing field where ALL PLAYERS are treated equal. Besides, you gotta let a horse out of the barn every now and then so they can run! :p

These weekend tournaments are affordable and offer an opportunity to enjoy some competition and, most importantly, to stay in stroke. Feel free to add any I may have inadvertantly omitted! :)

I read on this forum that The Spot pool room is owned by Pete Fusco. I had heard his "brother" (cousin) Jimmy also owns a pool room in the Philadelphia area.

Both of these gentlemen are veterans of the game, though I do not know a great deal about their accomplishments, due to a lack of readily available pool archival resources, but there are quite a few forum members who may know some Fusco stories.

I believe both of them competed during an era when straight pool was prevalent, maybe Hall of Famer Jim Rempe's heyday, and as well, they are both heralded as formidable one-pocket combatants during a time when one-pocket was the game of choice on and off the tournament trail. :p

I've never known jimmy to own a pool hall, and i'm FROM Philly. I think the closest he came, was that he owned the PRO shop in South Philly Billiards when it was open years ago, but other than Petey, the only other Fusco to own a pool hall in the Philly area that i know of, was MIKE fusco. (have no idea if there is any relation) but he hasn't had it in years.

Jam,

Mike is no relation to Jimmy or Pete, although he'd like you to think so.

Mike owned a room on Rt 73 in Maple Shade, NJ a few years ago.

Mike, thanks for the addition to the weekend tournament thread! This one slipped my radar! :p

I had difficulty finding the ADDRESS of this event. A 2-hour drive from Jackson, MS is the host pool room, Shananigans Billiards and Brew, 203 West Alabama Avenue, Ruston, Louisiana 71270. :)

Are you sure that the guy in the pic isn't a young Geese? LOL, you probably are-
IIRC, Jimmy Fusco won the 1hole Johnston City in the early 70s. Those days are a bit fuzzy for me. I was 4 and couldn't see anything above the table.

Pete does resemble Geese a slight tad. When Geese was in his prime, he was a road agent at the same time as Pete and Jimmy Fusco were in top form, beating quite a few heavyweights on the tournament trail. Geese had always been heralded as one of Maryland's best players, and I remember him stating that he came in third place at a Johnston City event in a pretty tough field at that time.

I have to admit that I am more cognizant of the road players from the '70s era, but the Fuscos have always held in high regard on and off the table as gentleman players. Jimmy Fusco still comes out to compete on occasion, and both Jimmy and Pete represent some of Philadelphia's finest.

I know of an incident in '83 or '84 in which Jimmy Fusco and Keith McCready battled it out for an undisclosed sum, posting for two sets, 8 ahead each. Jimmy had Keith one set loser and was getting ready to take down the cheese needing only one more game, with Keith stuck 7 games the next set. Keith managed to come back from the dead and got even on both sets, after a 10-hour battle. They both ended up quitting even! :p

If I make it to Trevose, PA this Sunday, I am going to endeavor to find out more about the accomplishments of the Fuscos. Some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, they are both some of pool's unsung heroes (IMO). :)

Great poster, Black-Balled, and one of my favorites, a great piece of pool memorabilia! Check out a young "Jimmy Fusco and friends." :)

What ever happened to the Murrey pool tables? They used to be quite popular in the '70s!

I feel like I know Hard Times, without ever having stepped foot in the joint. Keith misses everyone at Hard Times, to include Aggie, "Pepeto," Todd, James Bach, Jerry Brumstetter, Brook, DP, Little Man, and Paez. And then there were the happy times at Los Alamitos. :p

Here is the phone number and zip code for those interested in competing this Sunday. I have always found it helpful to know the zip code, so that I can get a map to and from an event, and the phone number definitely comes in handy if you get lost on the way!

JAM,

Murrey was bought out by Escalade Sports, the same people who do the Mosconi line.

Steve

I did not know that, Tablemechanic! The Mosconi line is one of the proud sponsors of Jeanette Lee. :)

If my memory serves me correctly, when they were getting ready to film the Atlantic City scene in "The Color of Money," a friend of mine in the Maryland area who owned a pool table distributorship was contacted by the movie people to provide a bid proposal. He was outbid by another vendor, which I think -- and I am not sure -- was Murrey tables!

According to Murrey's 2004-2005 brochure, the proseris PRO 6400 was the table used in The Color of Money.

Bogies in Houston is having a 1P/9-ball trny this weekend. The 1P actually started Thursday afternoon and will conclude tonight. The field has been cut down to 4 on the winners side and a few on the left side looking to stay alive. The A side matches are "Hillbilly" Bryant vs JJ and AZ's very own SENOR vs James Davis SR (i think). But SENOR is definitely one of the last 4 unbeatens. GO SENOR!

The 9ball kicks off tomorrow around lunch. I will keep you guys posted!
