Weight Bolt

I'm hoping someone could answer a few questions for me. Searching the forums didn't really turn up definitive answers. Anyways, here goes ...

When installing a weight bolt, how far does it go in? I've heard people say it goes all the way until you can't turn it anymore. Others say it depends on what your comfortable with. I installed one in mine the other day but now it seems to make a "clunking" noise. The hit doesn't sound solid as when it is out. Should I have glued it in as well?

Also, I've heard discussions on "forward balance", "reverse balance" and "neutral balance" but am unsure as to what they all mean. Can someone explain these terms to me? Does it refer to the distance of the bolt relative to the grip hand?

I appreciate any answers or comments you folks may have on the subject. Thanks.

Depends on what type of cue and weight bolt...many different styles, lengths, etc.... post a pic of the butt with bumper off and weight bolt..

Did you install it all the way in. A weight bolt can make a, lets see how I can describe it. A rattling, vibrating sound when it is loose.

Try tapping the bottom of the butt against the heel of your hand and see if you can duplicate the sound.

A weight bolt that is tapped at the butt end so your bumper will screw into it
is different than the hex head bolt that is also widely used.

If the drilled and tapped bolt hole is tight enuff, you should be able to adjust the balance somewhat by moving, even adding weight up or down the hole.

A pic of the bolt would help a bit. If it is the common 3/8th x 16 hex head bolt, it is easy to get more at your local supply house. Very common and widely used.

If the hole is sloppy, you might have to play with adjusting the bolt to see where you like it and then glue it in if you don't want to bury it at the end and tighten it down.

Even if you feel you need to secure it, you can use a dab or two of silicon caulking. That way if you or someone else needs to remove the bolt, it won't be a huge hassle to remove than if you use glue.

Forward balance means the balance point of the cue is ahead of where you hold it. Neutral is a balance point where you hold it, rear balanced (reversed?) is behind where you hold it.

Old cues are more neutral, more modern cues are forward balanced in general.

Adjusting a bolt inside the handle can allow some balance point adjustment. Adding weight or taking it away at the rear can allow balance adjustment as well.

I'll let the cue makers sort out your rattle. They are going to need to see pics to see what kind of weight bolt you have.
