I have a cue that does not have a weight bolt and I want to lighten it by 1.2 oz. How big of a deal is thing going to be and will it drasticaly change the balance of the cue? Will the cue sound funny after the material has been removed?
 
Can you tell what kind of material the handle tenon is?, ie, maple or purpleheart or something dark to suggest a rosewood? What is the current weight of the cue?

That is enough information to give you a ballpark figure for boring a hole in the very butt end of the cue.

Take 1.2 oz out here, and the balance will obviously shift forward.

I'd be more inclined to split it between the front and back if possible ..but since we don't know the cue's weight, balance point, or other specifics it's hard to speculate.

Obviously it will shift forward. The current weight of the cue, the species (as a surrogate to knowing the exact density of the handle tenon) of the handle tenon, and the amount to remove (1.2 oz) is enough to provide a ballpark figure of the shift in balance point. The exact location of the current balance point is not as critical.

No, you are right. For maple, a 1/2" bore would have to be way deep into the cue, like 13". I wasn't really thinking about how much weight 1.2 ounces is. The other weight and balance thread I posted in today, the OP asked about grams. I think I had grams on my mind.

I will run some numbers in my program for changing from a 3/8-10 FB SS pin to a G10 pin for a 19.2 ounce, 19" balance point cue shortly.

For a cue with a 3/8-10 FB SS pin, 19.2 ounces, with a 19.3" balance point measured from end of butt, changing to a like pin G10:

18.25 ounces, 18.78" balance point, .52 inch difference.

That doesn't get your 1.2 ounces. If you include a 2.75" deep bore at the butt of the cue, 1/2" diameter, it brings it to the desire 18 ounces, with a balance point of 19", .3" difference.

Obviously these are estimates, but they will be close. If the OP provides the weight and exact balance point of his cue and the handle tenon wood, I can update the numbers to a better estimate.

Certainly. But, a lighter shaft and pin change would push the balance point back more than a pin change and rear bore. A change on each side of the current balance point would help minimize the balance impact, as EightBall suggested.

I'm always scared of drilling the bottom b/c YOU NEVER KNOW what lurks there ?
What if the buttsleeve is actually threaded on like SW ?:eek:
A friend x-rayed his ebony cue with ss joint one time. It was still under 19 oz.
The bottom had a long drilled void.

The cue is a 2001 Omen in the Southwest design. The weight of the butt is 16.2 oz. The pin is a brass 3/8 11, the 4 shafts range from 3.2-3.8 oz. The handle looks to be made from maple. When you take the bumper off, you can see where a hole is drilled in the center of the handle material. I do not have the cue in front of me right now, I sent it back to Pete for a fine tuneing, so, I can not say what the exact balance point is at the moment. I will say that the balance point is around an inch above the leather wrap.

I am interested in lightening the cue a little, but, not at the cost of ending up with something that is not right or will feel funy. I have also heard that the butt-sleeve can become weak after the wood has been removed. Just wanted to get some information before going down that road.

The cue is made from ebony and amboyna burl, the ferrules are ivory and I am not interested in investing in new shafts. Thanks for your help and I hope the information I have provided will help.

Can an aluminum or G10 pin be had in the same thread pitch as what is used now, or, will the shafts need to be plugged and tapped for a good fit?

I don't have weights for 3/8-11 pins. But, if i use brass 3/8-10 to G10 3/8-10 in the pins I use, I come up with a weight reduction of 1.07, by changing the pin only. The balance shift is .55", to the rear.

IMO, I think you would feel the balance change along with the weight reduction.

Yes, Omen is cut into the flat of the joint pin....
