Professor R.H. Gilmer of Southern Billiards in Starkville, Miss. is putting together the first LADIES INVITATIONAL 10 BALL RING GAME. The date and invitees have yet to be announced. Some on the ladies tour might not be able to participate due to sponsorships that won't allow them to play in anything other than specific tours.

OK, who on the ladies tour do you think has the heart to participate in a high stakes ring game and who do you think the Professor should invite?

I don't think that any women from the WPBA are 'supposed' to gamble. To be frank with you, I'm sick of watching the women play. Sick, sick, sick, I tell ya.....

Great idea Hemi. I will be holding my breath hoping I am one of the lucky ladies. Joseph Cues...I don't think that is all together true that no one will show if Karen and Allison play. If you want to win you have to want to beat the best right?? Smorgass Bored...I'm sorry you have such a bad opinion of the women and women's pool...not all of us are all that bad. We are allowed to gamble as long as it is not at the WPBA tournaments. Anyway...on to my picks...
1. Myself
2. Monica Webb
3. Vivian Villarreal
4. Melissa Herndon
5. Jennifer Chen
6. Karen Corr
7. Kim White
8. Belinda Campos-Calhoun
9. Sarah Ellerby
10. Ga-Young Kim

Well, those are all if their sponsors will let them play. Just an idea.

Go Jeannie..... and Ga-Young Kim would be another good pick.

Actually, although Corr and Fisher are very strong players it doesn’t necessarily mean that they have an advantage in a ring game. IMO, the player who can create and make things happen, along with shooting well, will have the advantage. Many times it just depends on who the players follow, being in the right spot at the right time. And 10 ball has some subtle differences from 9 ball.

Sorry Sarah, let me clarify. I'm sick of watching the SAME 3 or 4 ladies on ESPN, time after time after time, year after year, ad nauseum. Your list looks intriguing. Add Ming Ng and VIOLA ! I'm not against women's pool OR WOMEN...

I think that Smorg's point may have been that a whole bunch of people are sick of seeing the WPBA and ONLY the WPBA on ESPN. We want to see some men's matches too. I don't count those stupid 7-ball matches and the trick shot shows, I personally was sick of those before they began.

BTW, why isn't Allison on your list, we Allison groupies need to know.

Sarah,

I'm curious why you didn't include Allison too. I wouldn't have asked if you hadn't included Karen. What about Jeanette lee?

I don't mind watching the women play at all. As a matter of fact, I'd like to see them play every day. I agree with one of the previous posts that it would be nice to see some of the other women play instead of it always being the same three or four players. I'd like to see the men play too but they don't look nearly as nice as the women.

You guys would do well to listen to Hustlefinger. Remember, Danny Basavich was far the favorite to win the Professor's first big Ring Game and poor ole Danny lost 25 games in a row, never winning a game and was eliminated. Like Hustlefinger said, anyone can win a Ring Game. Especially a 10 ball Ring Game.

Hey Gremlin - You forgot the PRIDE of Arkansas - Lisa Marr. She's got game and gamble.

One thing that makes Allison and Karen so strong is their safety play. In the ring game format the safety is eliminated. The winner will be determined by who gets the rolls and who is able to convert their chances at the table. Granted, if you were to give all the ladies an equal shot at ten racks with ball in hand, Allison and Karen would probably run more of them than the rest of the field. But they might not get the opportunities in the ring game format.

if its a non pro or your getting some non pro women players, think about inviting Pam Bell or Julia Gabrial. Both are pretty big gamblers from what I've seen.

Hey, the ladies already have a "ring" game. It's called marriage - and the guys lose!

Good point John. I've never met Lisa but I hear she has a ton of heart. By the way, I'm sorry I couldn't make it to your tourney Sunday. I hear I missed a barn burner. I would loved to have seen Keith make it there and matched up with Dave. Talk about a barn burner...............$Bill

Hi All,

Sarah - I like your list...thanks for including me....I would definitely play if I could make it out there...

My list would be:
1. Myself
2. Monica Webb
3. Helena Thornfeldt
4. Vivian Villareal
5. Kim White
6. Jeannie Seaver
7. Pam Bell
8. Julie Kelly
9. Jeanette Lee
10. Jennifer Chen

My list is based on: A) the players that have gambled in the past (or at least I suspect they have...LOL) and B) personalities...players that would give the ring game a little spice and maybe some of the creative sharking/trash-talking that goes with a ring game!

Melissa

There are a lot of good players out there that are women. Id love to see a womens tournament of some kind with a full firld. Dont forget Shelby Ellin from S C or Shauna Alexander from Fla.
Both play well and have heart.

I agree with everyone's ideas of who should play. It is tough to decide because there are many women who would be interested. I know some have gambled more than others and would be better in the ring game situation. Someone posted earlier that Karen and Allison have an edge because of their safety play and that is the truth. Things would definitely change when no one can play safe.

I didn't include Allison and Jeanette because I wasn't sure if Cuetec allowed Allison to "gamble" and because Jeanette has stated that she doesn't gamble anymore. So I figured they were automatically ruled out.

Smorgass Bored....I apologize for taking that the wrong way. I thought maybe you had something against the women players in general. But I agree that there need to be new faces on TV and it is very boring watching the same faces. I will try my hardest to change that for you in 2004.

Also, my apologies for not including Ming. She would be a good person to add and is always up for a game. If non pros are included Jeannie Seaver would be good as well. I think it is also a matter of how the women play and who plays well with the pressure of putting up and possibly losing their own money. That is definitely something to factor in.

Melissa....I wish I could have been included on your list. I think there some things that might be a conflict of interest on your list. I think you might know what I mean.

Those two don't need to gamble :)

Whatever happened to Christi Carter? IIRC she was a gambler.

and don't forget Diana Minor.

The Professor's 10 Ball Ring Game Tournament is just that, a "Tournament". This tournament will pay the top 3 places and pay out 100% of the money, as the first Ring Game Tournament at Southern Billiards did. This is merely a different format with a higher entry fee. That is what is meant by, having the "Heart" to play in a Ring Game type tournament.

This format is much less like gambling than the BCA, WPPA or other, WINNER TAKE ALL tournament. No money changes hands after a game ends. All game progress is kept track of by a computer and displayed on TV screens. Yes, the winner will get the lion's share of the money but 2nd and 3rd place winners will be paid also.

This format, where all participants play in the same game has proven to be more interesting to the fans also.

The computer read-out will look something like this.

Sarah, Oh my gosh....I TOTALLY meant to keep you in the list! Stupid oversight on my part! I guess that is what happens when I am posting from work and my attention gets divided....sorry! And by the way, if we ever have a doubles event....I would love to have you as a partner. I think our games are very similar....and I think your intensity and passion for the game would be a good influence on me!

I do understand your meaning, but I simply chose players that are shooters....and gamblers. I officially put you back on the list where you belong....and I will let you decide which player to kick out!!!

Have a wonderful and safe New Year!!!

Love, Mel

OOOHHH.....a doubles tournament! Melissa...we might not ever miss a ball :) Also, I agree, definitely the shooters have to be involved. Safeties will get you nowhere.

About the gambling/tournament aspect. You are right Hemi, it is a tournament but I guess the whole ring-game name makes it sound more like gambling. But I think showing the payout process and the way things work will be a good argument for getting sponsors to let people play.
