Scenario: Playing one pocket with someone I've played before, but we weren't playing for anything at the time. I won 8 of the 10 games.

Situation: I'm up 5 balls to zero. I play a good shot and lay up 2 balls in front of my hole and run the cue ball up table and it stops about an inch behind a ball so that my opponent can't move anything from my hole.

The Play: My opponent puts the ferrule of the stick on top of the cue ball and moves the cue ball around in (small) circles for a good 2-3 seconds until he gets it frozen right on the 8-ball. It was more than an intentional foul where he taps it with the tip, he literally placed the cue ball in an exact spot it with his ferrule/shaft on top of the cue ball.

Result: I was PISSED. I said that moving the cue ball like that was cheating, plain and simple. I broke my cue down and said I wouldn't play with anyone who needs to win that bad.

His Position: "On any foul, I owe one ball. No matter what kind of foul."

What kind of BS is THAT! Anyone who needs to win that bad should play by themselves. Geesh.

CueTable Help

I think I would have just laughed out loud at his move, maybe saying something like, "Wow, you are REALLY desparate, aren't you?" Then I would have just rolled the cue ball down into that stripe ball near the head rail and sat back and said, "Why don't you try another one of those ridiculous foul shots, that would be a pretty smart play." After all, with a five to zero ball lead and the balls laying the way they are, your opponent has virtually no chance to win the game. I would have ridiculed him for the rest of the game and he would have been the one to unscrew his cue and quit.

Well, then you play his game. Just use your ferrule to bring that stripe from the bottom rail and freeze it to the other side of the ball.

Then look at him like he's stupid, and say "Now, you want to keep doing this jackass s**t? I have enough patience to be just as stupid as you, but for longer. I can make this game last for hours, mother****er!"

Yeah, that is pretty a desperate move. If you were playing Texas Express rules, I think the ruling would be that you would have the option to put the cue ball back where you thought it was before he moved it, since a legal hit was not made. Just as if he would have picked the cue ball up and dropped it on the floor.

One of the best moves I ever saw came from this kid we used to call Dippy Dave in Cleveland.

Dave was playing a large set, race to 5 1-hole for about 5 large. It came down to the score being tied at 4-4 and 7 balls each. Both players needed 1 ball. They were playing on a super duper tight table that would only fit 1.33 balls in the pocket through the jaws. Anyway, several times during the match the opponent hung a key ball in his pocket and Dippy would try to follow it in with the CB or jump the CB off the table so the ball would spot. He never had any success following the ball in.

So here's what happens. The opponent hung the case ball in his pocket and left Dippy the CB at the other end of the table frozen to the end rail and just off the tip of the corner pocket on the same side of the table as his opponents pocket. Dippy looks at it for a while and figures he has no way to knock the CB or OB offf the table or and ZERO chance of following the ball in the pocket with the CB.

So here is what he does. It kinda reminds me of your story. He shoots the CB verry slowy directly at the guys case ball then shoots the CB again while it's moving and knocks the guys ball in the hole and the CB off the table. What a move that was. They argued until it almost became a fist fight but Dippy knew he was wrong and paid the guy.

Another shot from that leave that will test the knowledge of your opponent. Take your cuetip and lay it against the cue ball and gently shove it to the inside of the corner tip and press it against the rail. Wala, corner hook. Big argument time. I have done both your shot and mine from time to time for a joke with my non gambling opponents.

Isn't it illegal to jump the cue ball in 1p? So, would it be possible in this case to execute a jump and knock the guy's ball in? Or possibly just jump the cue ball of the table while knocking his ball in?

No problem here---On your shot just pick up the cue ball and put it where you want it.

The will to win at any cost is sadly one of the worst traits in a lot of human beings. And the sad thing here is, it was just a "fun" match. Kinda took the fun right out of it, didn't it?

Seems like there's always someone in the poolhall that you wanna take outside, strip 'em down naked, hang 'em from a tree by their feet, and lash 'em with a wet cane (or in this case, a house cue :D ).

Here's the thing. I used to play with my girlfriend in a similar fashion. I was much better than she, so when we were playing I would focus on particular shortcomings in my game, like kicking, or multi-rail banks, etc. In 8 ball when I had only the 8 ball left, I let her call my pocket, and I had to figure out a way to make it there. (She knew enough about the game to make this really difficult.)

The way I figure it, just use it as practice for when things don't go your way in a real matchup and just start referring to him as your b****. When you got mad, all you did was get as frustrated as he was at having his A$$ handed to him by you. Take it in stride, and overcome my friend.

DCC Rules:
15. Deliberate "double hitting" the cue ball or an object ball is not allowed. When taking a deliberate cue ball foul, player must use the tip of the cue, no tapping with side of the stick. Should this occur, the incoming player shall have the right to place all moved balls, including the cue ball, back to the original position on the table.

1Pocket.org rules
6.6 Intentional fouls are an accepted part of One Pocket tactics as long as they are played by use of a legal stroke, such as by lightly touching the cue ball with the cue tip; by rolling the cue ball to a new location without regard for legal contact with either an object ball or a cushion; by pocket scratching the cue ball; or by using a legal jump technique to force the cue ball off the table. However, if the acting official rules that a player has used an illegal technique to direct the cue ball or any object balls to a more desirable location, then the incoming player has the option of either playing the balls where they lie, or requesting the official to restore all such moved balls to their location prior to the illegal maneuver. The offending player is charged the standard one ball foul penalty, and in addition may be further penalized at the discretion of the acting official under the general rules of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Those are good rules. If EVERY illegal action no the table is simply a one-ball foul, the best move to return from the break in one pocket would be to pick up all the balls and move them right in front of your pocket. Clearly there have to be limits on what your one-ball penalty will buy you.

The correct counter is as follows: Use the cue to sweep all remaining balls to by your pocket, declare it a foul, and then spot a ball. (Make sure not to leave him a shot on the spotted ball.)

In seriousness, I'm pretty sure that if it's not a legal stroke you can take the foul AND make him re-shoot from the original spot.

Cory
