I need a break cue, really, recently I've received my schmelke sneaky player with cocobolo handle and I absolutely LOVE IT. It looks like a bar cue from far but the details and finish are amazing :)

I'm tempted to ordering another schmelke sneaky and use it as a breaker, but on the other hand I'm tempted by some specialized break cues (I don't care about jumping tbh) libe BK2 or Icebreaker.

My question is, does the butt makes any difference in terms of breaking ? Does for example dedicated OB breaker outperform Schmelke with OB break shaft ? Sorry for spamming the threads but I'm torn between a few choices and I want to complete my billiard gear and start playing on my city local league.
 
Break cue's are typically lighter, with a thicker shaft and a hard tip.
I don't think that a break (only) cue has to be that special, for me it just has to be a light cue, with a real hard tip.
There are a few good break tips or jump / break tips like Samsara and Tiger Icebreaker, but if it's not a jump break and let's say a Schmelke sneaky, just ask them to recommend one.
I spoke to David Schmelke yesterday, and they can make a sneaky that would be good for breaking.
He has tips & ferrules that they don't sell, but they use them on the break cues they build.

It'll feel different for sure, however, that doesn't mean it's going to affect one's performance. For example, I used to break with house cues of the wall, my playing cues, different break cues, and have now used a BK2 for the last three or so years, whose feel nor sound I particularly like, rather it's counting that's convinced me to do so - I seem to have an ever so slightly higher average making balls on the break. Subjectively speaking, however, I may have controlled the cue ball and lowest-numbered ball best with my custom playing cues, that is, until I had enough practice under my belt to get similar results with the BK2. What initially convinced me is the break speed: I consistently get about one diamond farther with the BK2 (with phenolic tip, also have shaft with a hard leather tip on it) in distance, same stroke, and I attribute the reason that I make more balls with it on average to the break speed. Still hate the sound, as well as the fact that one can damage the cue ball with it, though.

Jacoby's Butt is Differen't for a good reason-

When breaking you should hold the ( brake cue ) at the futhermost (spot! ( Designed similiar to a Snooker cue butt) The Cue is tapered so your hand doesn't follow up the shaft!! It is a Laminated shaft , 18 is good for 9 ft table. Use a flat Tip . You want no english on the break 98% of the time. Jimmy Wetch has been using his break cue in His matches- To Great Sucess!! Please Order your Jacoby break Cue- Look for online specials. Mark
 
With the cue you are playing with I'd recommend putting a good milkdud tip on and break with it as well as shoot with it. I have a cheaper (relatively) sneaky Pete that is identical in weight, shaft, tip, everything just like my expensive cue and I break with it, almost always drop balls and leave cb in middle of table. My break cue usually stays at home with my expensive cue because it's a lot nicer to just carry around one cue plus a jump cue, and don't have to worry as much about someone knocking it over and lessening the value. Try using your playing cue to break with no English, from center of table and hit the front ball dead nuts head on. Works for me!

There are only a few players that I know that break with their playing cue. If you have a hard tip it doesn't seem to cause any damage to the cue. A soft tip would mushroom from the pounding.

I made a cue for a guy with a Kamui black med tip. That tip is very hard, He shoots, breaks, and jumps with it. The ferrule is a 1/2 in long Juma.

There is much talk about break cue weight. Some like a 2 pound cue and some like a very light cue. I believe the best is a break cue that weighs the same as the player that you use. A hard tip like phenolic or one of the hard break tips will give you more power on the break. The power of the break is proportional to the speed of the cue ball. A harder tip will give you more speed.

the ob break shaft breaks fantastic. i've only gotten the chance to use the shaft though so i can't comment on how the whole cue performs. i can't imagine the difference is huge but it really doesn't have to be. the break shaft is as good as anything offered by anyone. custom or production
