What about the non-smoking?

Yeah, that's right and why we're at it, why don't we let people just drink as much as they want and drive 90 miles an hour? I mean come on, if they kill some innocent people, who happen to be on the same highway, well hell, they didn't have to take that road, right? I mean why should some one have to pay to take a cab just to avoid the possiblity that they may kill someone? That is just stupid.

Some people do drink as much as they want every weekend, and how they drive home is beyond me. I am not a 'in your face' smoker. I am considerate of other people and whether it bothers them or not. I do my share of going outside to smoke. My Mom and brother and son do not allow smoking in their houses, that's fine. I don't force people to sit in the smoking section of a restaurant, I sit in the nonsmoking section, but I want 5 minutes after dinner to have a smoke outside. Non-smokers are welcome to go where they want,
and I will go where I want. I won't hang at a non-smoking place though.
That's why we have free choice in this country. No one forces you to go
to a smoking Pool room, you make that choice yourself ... and it is your
responsibility. Most non smokers stay across the room anyway unless there
is action going on, then they come to be a railbird, but that is their decision,
they know smoke is there, and it is their responsibility for their decision, not
mine. I just don't want to listen to all the whining and crying after they made
the decision to be around it to begin with. Don't like it ... go where it isn't,
simple as that ... I am sure many a parent would not want their child exposed
to gambling in a Pool hall either, cause it could become additive, and detrimental to your life and your health (it was the cause of my cousin's
death), but that is why we all have a brain, so we can make those choices,
and we all live with those choices. Evidently, non-smoking is not that big
a factor or they would go out of their way to go to a non-smoking room,
even if they had to drive 30 minutes more. Oh, and I have to mention
the ones that don't smoke, complain, but smoke pot or crack, sometimes
inbetween games outside the Pool room, or doing dope in the bathroom.
Hey, I am willing to get along, give and take, but I am not going to be
treated like a red-headed stepchild about either.

And, yes I did 3 tours of Nam in the Navy in 67-70, including the Delta,
and 4 trips up river to Saigon, of which 3 I was at the helm. I was
referred to as 'Lil Boats of the 7th Fleet', but that is a long story behind
that.

People who dont smoke probly feel the same way that you do when you go to a place that has no smoking...the effect it has on me, my eyes, throat, etc.. and even nose bleeds from extended exposure... Thats the reasoning behind my posts...

I hold nothing against smokers, its a bad habbit, whitch I am guilty of a few, so I cant judge anyone, I do however have to pick and choose to the places I attend... Not because of the smoker, but because of the smoke...

The only choice I'm making is to go out in public to play pool with other people.

I haven't read this whole string so maybe somebody metioned it but in New York they banned smoking. It's the freakin best thing that ever happened to the pool halls. Even many smokers like it. if the want a cig, they just step outside.

I just wanted to ask those who attended our tournament (Southern Classic Open) at The Pool Room in Duluth, GA this past week what they thought of our non-smoking facility. I know our room is nice and it sure helps things stay alot cleaner, but did you ever think it work in the pool world? Just curious for some feedback.

I recently moved from the Duluth area to Marietta, I always enjoyed coming to the Marietta location, where were you guys 1 year ago!? ...While I enjoy an occasional cigar, I would LOVE to play in a Non-Smoking room...will you guys remain NS, or was this just for The Classic?...will the Marietta room remain smoking?...I know you do have a NS area there...it would be nice to come home after playing and not have to change in the laundry room and shower before bed...

I had it worse than you Scott, I was stuck in Alabama for two years, '63 - '65.
Just kidding, and I commend you for your service. Hope you signed up with the VA for their health care. Do it, and get in the computer. You would be surprised at the excellent care the vets get here in Florida. I waited too long and can't get in. Yet they want to give free health care to the illegals.

I quit a 3 pack a day addiction back in 75 and it was not easy but I don't care if anyone else smokes, just not in my car or my home. My body just can't handle it anymore. In fact I had to cut down going to bars to play pool because of the smoke. Back when I smoked there was no air-conditioning so the doors were always open and the smoke wouldn't stay in the room.

Diane, contact the owner of Anastasia Billiards in St Augustine. Her pool room is smoke free and she seems to be doing quite well. As an added benefit the tables and balls are a lot cleaner as is the pool room. She has a table and chair set up out front where smokers can go.

I believe KT noted in his book that not all smokers get lung cancer but all persons with lung cancer have smoked.

I don't know what book you are referring to, but unfortunately there are many people who get lung cancer who've never smoked. Often these are people like musicians or waitresses who've worked a lot of their lives in clubs and bars that allowed smoking. My grandmother got throat cancer simply from living with my grandfather who smoked 40 a day. Of course the pro-smoking lobby would argue that this simply proves smoking has nothing to do with cancer and they would have had cancer anyway as you cannot prove otherwise. (Or at least you can never prove otherwise to anyone who will never believe the actual evidence.)

Diane - You've asked for feedback, but if you thought about it you already knew the answers you'd get. Everyone who doesn't smoke (With the exception of any non-smoker who lives with a smoker and is resigned to it) is going to say "No Smoking" for all the obvious health and comfort reasons. Anyone who smokes will say "Smoking please" for all the
obvious reasons of convenience in accommodating their addiction. Neither party is ever going to answer any differently.

From a business point of view apocryphal comments here are not much use. If you really intend to make this decision based on what people want then at your next tournament have people fill out a simple questionnaire on whether they smoke or not and whether if it was or wasn't allowed they would come again next time. Then you'll have actual statistics from your customers to base a decision on.

Hey Diane,
Being a heavy smoker, I was concernd about attending.
But, you know what? "I LOVED IT". Was there 6 of 7 days.
In the outside smoking area I met & talked with players, fans & heard lots of pool gossip....none of which would have
happened in a smoking pool room.

I'll return to POOL ROOM II this weekend for the Seal Tour Event.

The Viking Tour Event this past week was the best event I've attended.

The Duluth room is non-smoking because of the county it is in which requires it.

Down here there are some places that u can't smoke, and its good for the players that don't smoke. and not good for the drinkers..
Non smoke pool rooms are a lot better.U don't come out smelling like smoke n ash.also when u take a day off work and don't tell wifey .U'll never get cought due to a smokey pool room..Thats in your clothes and hair..

Didn't attend the tournament, but I am an old time
Pool player, gambler, and smoker.

I would suffer through a tournament if it was a good
tournament. If it was so-so, I wouldn't.

Being a smoker and a gambler, I would not hang out
there, nor would I gamble there. Opponents get a
little upset during a $500 or $1,000 set when you
stop the match to go outside to smoke. Right or wrong,
if I am involved in a tight tense match and I want to
smoke, I want it right then, not 20 minutes later.

And for all those that are going to express health concerns,
I have smoked over 43 years, and just had chest x-rays
2 months ago and they are perfectly clear because I
have always watched my diet and exercised my whole life.

Going outside to smoke during $10 per game 9 ball, people would care about. Around here if someone needs a smoke during $500 or $1000 sets, they get to smoke with no complaints. What kind of jerk would complain about that....I mean if they are betting alot of money they need to understand that the smoker's nerves get frayed if he doesn't have a cigarette (even though that's what they want lol).

Were you on the Talladega in Bremerton, Wa. in 69 or 70?

I think that the room is fantastic! You can tell a lot of thought and work went into it.
Non-smoking rooms will always be tough on the smoking players but those who play there will get used to it. It hurt business for awhile when they forced San Diego into non-smoking, but they all came back eventually.

Good luck with the place. I'm sure it will do well.

I just wanted to thank everyone who voiced their opinion either way. I certainly didn't mean to spark an argument and I'm sure you guys can respect each other enough to let it go. Atlanta is a huge city and I believe that for every smoker we might lose, we gain one that will drive 3 counties away because we are non-smoking. I have been both in my life. I like the fact that everything stays so clean and I can wear my nice clothes in a beautiful poolroom without ruining them and smelling like a fresh lit cannonball when I leave. Our smokers don't seem to mind going outside and several have said that they hope we stay non-smoking.
You will just have to come see us and form your own opinion...we offer a great facility that should overcome a this minor inconvenience and by the way, we are non-smoking by law...

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you implying that your clean bill of health means that cigarette smoke, first or secondhand, is not harmful? Surely not (I hope). The connection to numerous diseases is undeniable, though there are lucky few (yourself included) who escape unscathed.

As a non-smoker, I find the presence of cigarette odor in a room absolutely repulsive. When I went to the Mohegan Sun for the ICOC I got the worst headache because of the smoking on the floor - and they have very good air circulation/filtration even. I really don't think I could play in a smoking pool room again. Fortunately I live in Massachusetts where I don't have to.

In all honesty, I feel that we non-smokers should not have to sacrifice our health simply for the convenience of the smoking crowd. It seems more reasonable for a smoker to take a step outside for the occasional puff than to have the non-smoker endure the discomfort and the health hazard of secondhand smoke. This only seems logical.

From a room owner's standpoint it makes perfect sense to have a non-smoking room. Not only do ash and butts contribute to a dirty atmosphere, but air pollution definitely affects the cloth and furniture.

With new studies and advertisements about the risk of smoking, as well as the ridiculous cost of cigarettes, I imagine that the number of new smokers in younger generations will decrease considerably. Also, many lifetime smokers will quit. My father quit smoking after 30 years or so, and he will be the first to tell you how happy he is that he did.

You say "live and let live", but you are contributing negatively to my health by putting your smoke in my lungs. I won't go as far as to say that you are killing me in doing so (as some do), but you certainly aren't helping me live.

Hey, I don't tell you how to live, don't tell me ... okay?
Second hand smoke is not absolute, that's why the word MAY is
on cigarette packs. Hell, half the cities across the country have
smog that is worse than any second hand cigarette smoke they
might be exposed to. Back when I was growing up, you might have
just been called a pansie, but I think it is because you haven't
sinned enough to be more tolerant of us sinners ... lol

Why don't we just restrict fat people to certain menu items in a
pool room, the ones without fat ...
see where this going ... I grew up in the 60's & I did 3 tours of Nam,
so it would be best to let this die where it is ...

Scott, I have read all your post on this smoking thing. As someone who has had a smoking related cancer and thankfully survived, I will tell you , you are so far out in left field with your thinking that you are behind home plate. However I understand your denial of the harmful effects of smoking. Most people who are to weak to quit ignore or just too stupid to believe confirmed data. I'm not going to say that I'm happy your chest is clear, because the more smokers who believe they have a right to blow smoke in my face that die leave more clean air for me to breathe. If you would read medical facts on smoking you would find out that heart problems is a major problem with smokers. Also the one real health issue you can count on is emphysema. All smoker will die from this condition. Hope you have another cig for me when you read this, it will just speed up the process. As far as being considered a pansy for not smoking, most people that I ran into while growing up smoking, thought I was a dumdass for lighting up.---Smitty
