My local poolhall is in need of someone to do tips,ferrules,and shaft cleaning. So I'm wondering what do you guys think the basics or have to haves to do this basic cue work?

Need a small lathe setup for ferrels and tips , also shaft cleaning ... Cueman makes a video that pretty much tells the basics ... somebody might sell cheap or even give it to you ... Comes with the Deluxe and a few have been sold ... Good luck ... There's a little more to it than you expect ... You also have to stay clean to keep your tolerances ...

Thanks Eric for your input. I have been looking around to try and pickup a used cue repair lathe but just haven't found anything I can afford yet.
As far as actually doing the work I had planned on either paying someone for some lessons on tips and ferrel repair and or getting one of the instructional videos out to help get me started.

Denatured alcohol
Some kind of sanding sealer,and a wax of some kind,preferably carnauba
Different ferrule materials
Several different kinds of tips
Collets for holding shaft in lathe chuck
Utility knife blades
Either a small,ground steel plate,or a small granite surface plate to use adhesive-backed sandpaper on for sanding the backs of tips,a wood block just isn't flat enough for my tastes.
Not one,but 2 different CA glues,one water-thin,and a gel type or a thicker version
A good measuring instrument,either calipers or a 0-1" micrometer
Safety glasses
Paper towels
A magnifying glass,higher power the better
A wide variety of drill bits,never know when you have to replace a ferrule with an odd attachment method,or "out of the box" tenon size,forcing you to fabricate from solid rod
Patience,and pride in your work
I know this list sounds daunting and expensive,and may very well be,but everything I have listed will pay for itself eventually,and will piss you off in spades the first time you need them and don't HAVE them. Tommy D.

your better off going to the hardware store and picking up a wood dowel to practice putting ferrells and tips on, after about a hole box of cheap tips you should have a idea off what not to do. also the basic cue repair dvd is pretty cheap compared to messing up someones cue. check it out.
