I will start this thread just to see the common characteristics and what is different from room to room. I think different sizes of rooms and whether you have alcohol or not all play a part in how you run a room. So give a lot of info.

Cue & Cushion- St Louis MO
17 tables total- 2 3-cushion tables, 1 snooker table, One-pocket match table with 4 7/16 pockets, 2 7-ft bar tables 1 8-foot bar table, 10 9-foot tables. No alcohol, pretty good drinks and snacks and candy selection. No restaurant. Large selection of cues. Sell pool tables retail and offer repair services and moving. Nice dart selection.

Pool time is $3.60/hour per person full price. Numerous discounts from Student rates to Early Bird Special, to online coupons, Val Pack coupons, Yellow page coupons. Also $20 all day special.

St Louis pool playing market in my opinion is oversaturated right now. Stagnant economy means less disposable income. Pool rooms are really struggling. A friend of mine works tournaments around town and another pool room is going to cut their room in half to try and survive. This is after several closings in the past couple years. I know one more that is quietly up for sale. I will not reveal their names out of respect. I dont want online gossip getting out of hand. Good news is a new room will be opening Oct 1 by former "Billiards on Broadway" owner Harold Johnson. His new room is called "Cuetopia". Not sure about the spelling though. I wish him the best of luck. Tough times right now. Hope to hear from other managers and owners about the state of pool in your area, what is going right and what is going wrong with the market.

Chalk & Cue Billiards in Cameron, MO.
I have 11 tables ; 8 Valley bar boxes, 2 gold crown snooker tables,1-9' gold crown, and 1-9' gold crown in storage. 2 dart boards, juke box,and video games (in sep room ). Room is about 3300sq.ft. Starting our 3rd year this month. There was one poolhall here before we opened that lasted about 6-8 months. We bought those tables and decided to give it a shot. It was 25 yrs. ago since the last hall was here, so we have to try to get the younger generation interested in playing pool. The man that owned that one (Cameron Bob) is a regular at this poolhall. Still very tough on snooker table. Snooker tables get a ton of play.No alcholol.Serve pop, pizza, sandwiches, snacks.hours are 5-10pm weekdays and 5-12pm on fridays & saturdays. Hours vary right now while I'am trying to decide whether to be sole owner, since I work in K.C during the day.Weekends are picking up again. In house league on Tuesday. Hourly rates are 3.00 per person per hour, play 5 get 1 hour free. Bar boxes are.75 per game or by the hour.We try to hold monthly tournaments with calcutta auctions.Dave Matlock, L.A. Mark Chernin and alot of K.C, and St. Joe players come play here .Nice atmosphere, very clean . 50 miles north of K.C.

Room Stats

Wilmington, NC. 36000 +- square feet. 29 tables, 24 bowling lanes, 100 seat full service restaurant, full alcohol service, two bar/lounges. Basic pool rates are $3.50/hour/person but many specials. Pool business is staying even to slightly ahead of last year (+2-3%), bowling up 10-13%!?

We used to run two $3,000-$5,000 added tournaments every year. We stopped last year. Even with co-sponsors we didn't make as much as we do off our regular business. We just got tired after 13 years.

You can check out our price schedule etc. at www.breaktimetenpin.com

Usually...You CAN'T make it on $3 per hour. You have to have an absurdly low price to lure people in. Then you can sell them food and beer and soda. The guys that ONLY play pool during happy hour and only drink water all day are COSTING you money. Funny thing is..they will always remind you how wonderful they are for your business. In the grocery stores they call it a "loss leader" I believe.

Located outside of a Marine base ....

Which one? Hansen or Schwab? I guess it could be Futenma, though I understand that operation is moving (has moved?) to Schwab. In 1968 I tried desperately to raise the money to put an A&W (or anything resembling a US hamburger joint, or even a Shakey's, heaven help me) in Kin or Henoko. I just couldn't convince anybody how rich we'd be if we did that.... <sigh>
