What are your Life's Main Philosophies?

The meek shall inherit the earth, after they rip the living beating heart out of the chest of the world's bullies.

About 50 years ago on a talk show the host had on five mega-millionaires and he touched on the matter of what happiness boils down to for folks like them who seemingly had every material thing that anyone could ever wish for.

Four of them seemed to find the question simplistic and didn't want to blurt out a similarly simplistic knee-jerk response.

The fifth guest who apparently had thought the matter over more than a few times in his past gave a response that I've never forgotten:

Happiness for him -- each and every day -- reduced to: "Having something to do, someone to love, and something to look forward to."

Here are a few phrases that I have learned in my life that I have felt have some relevance to my life philosophy.

Everything in its Proper Time

Fortune Favors the Brave & Strong

Dare to go beyond your limits

Don’t pet the sweaty things, and don’t sweat the petty things.

When you do what you did, you get what you got

When you stop chasing the wrong things you give the right things a chance to catch you

Take what you can, Give nothing back

Always in motion is the future

Do or do not…There is no try.

If winning was easy, Losers would do it.

Money won, is twice as sweet as money earned

Never play pool for money with a man named after a state.

If you can't shoot straight, you can't play.

If you can't play, don't try intimidating your opponent with money.

Buying a good cue won't make your stroke straight.

Don't ever bet anyone that water isn't wet.

Never lend your money to an opponent, to match up.

Here's a pool philosophy that I learned from my friend Gene Nagy (RIP) that I use all the time and hasn't failed me yet:

If the shot looks like it almost goes but not quite ----------> It goes.

Never gamble with a man who says good morning in the afternoon.

...chances are, he ain't no workin' stiff

Build your legacy

My legacy is how I will be remembered. I want to be remembered as a fearless protector, provider and loyal person who loved his family and friends. One who was kind, gentle, forgiving, reliable and patient. A man that loves God and is not ashamed of it. Please make me this man Lord.

Damn! You don't want much, do you?

And this is why-

This will eventually get moved to NPR, but while it is here:

My philosophy of life is very simple. I live in America and therefor consider myself a free man.

I live my life intent on not causing harm or fear of harm to any other person. As long as I meet that requirement I am free to do whatever I wish. I pay zero attention to most laws. For crying out loud it is illegal in most of the south to have oral sex with your wife, so I have no respect for the silly folks who pass such laws. I obey speed laws when in traffic or on dangerous roads, but otherwise I drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for the conditions I am in.

What I do in the privacy of my own home is not any business of society. My home is my castle and if anyone comes barging through my door yelling "police" they will be met with 11 rounds of 12 gauge hell. Home invaders know how to dress and yell like cops, so I would take no chances with the safety of my wife.

I am not religious. I have no time for ghosts, spirits, demons, angels or devils. My obligation in life is to my fellow man and I will lift up anyone who falls before me. My moral code is based on the Golden Rule. (Just because I do not believe does not mean I do not respect and obey the rules that religious texts spell out for how humans are to interact. If I could get my religious friends to do the same the world would be better for it.)

I am not so egotistical as to think there is an afterlife. I see no reason that the universe would wish to host me more than once. And I think it takes a pretty over-sized ego to believe that you are valuable enough to live again or forever. Therefor, the year after my death holds no more concern for me than the year before my birth did.

I love and respect you Jerry.
I know how hard you work in spite of immense adversity and disappointment.

Now I gotta out you-

For those of you here, Jerry farms his own land and donates much of the food he grows to the underprivileged.

For this, there is no praise high enough....

Oh and philosophies-
"Happiness is not a destination, it's a way of traveling"
"Ideas without action are stillborn"

Addendum:
"If you keep doin' what you've been doin', you'll keep gettin' what you've been gettin'"
