Should be at the top of your list

McGoorty
Mastering Pool by George Fels
Capelle's Play Your Best Straight Pool {if you play it}
The Road Player
Hustlers, Beats, and Others

There are lot more, many too expensive for many people. If you do a search on AZ you'll find several lists.

Which one would you suggest?

Chris:

I have to agree with Neil and Pushout on this -- Mastering Pool by George Fels is an absolute must-have. It's chock full of good stuff about all pool games (including straight pool -- which I personally bought the book for way back when). You'd be extremely hard pressed to find an as-valuable book as this one!

Which one would you suggest?

Mastering Pool. I got a copy before it came out, from George when I mailed questions about it to him care of The National Billiard News. That would have been in 1978:cool:
If I remember right, Advanced Pool just rehashes some of the stuff in the first book. I don't really think there is anything in it that makes it better than Mastering Pool. I'll take a quick look at it this afternoon and if my thoughts change I'll post.

I think my answer is going to have to be based on what your intent is with regards to your library... If it is just for collecting pool/billiards related books then all of the suggestions are great to have and you can add...

Willie's Game
The Hustler
Road Player

From the looks of it tho I think you are working on an instructional library and if that is the case I must offer up a single book..

http://www.amazon.com/Science-Pocket-Billiards-Jack-Koehler/dp/0962289027

If you like drills I happen to like

The Pro Book
The Advanced Pro Book
IPAT series

A new one for everyone is Bob Henning's new "Pro Safeties".... If I had one book I was going to buy for every pool player I know for Xmas that may be the one......

I've had alot of books & these are the ones I've managed not to sell or give away.
1) The Gos Pool of Bank Pool
2) Banking With The Beard
3) Play Your Best Pool
4) The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards
5) The Great Break Shot
6) Byrnes New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards
7) Safety Tool Box
8) The 99 Critical Shots in Pool
I also have Guaranteed Improvment by Joe Tucker. Theirs 20 practice drills in it that will help improve your cue ball control.

Perhaps I am a little jaded but I personally do not care for the instruction in a lot of the older books out there.

Equipment has changed a lot and these books do not accurately reflect that change.

I assume you are sticking to books only but here are a few great videos as well.

1. The 8-ball bibles - great theory for bar table pool
2. The science of one pocket
3. The great break shot + racking secrets :)

Ok based on what I have seen here I have changed it from Advanced pool to Mastering pool. Thanks for all the great ideas folks. I have also added The science of pocket billiards and pro safeties to the list.

I forgot to say that I also own;
All of the boot camp DVD's
all of Joe Tuckers books and dvd's
and Max Eberle's Powerful Pool Dvd's

Are there anymore "must owns" that anyone here wants to suggest?

I've enjoyed reading many of the books listed in the responses to your question of reference, and I must say it has been wonderful realizing the spectrum of information, as well as the volume. As I have many years of experience playing and few of structured learning, books concerning the mental aspects of the game became most effective in advancing my level of play. When I was led to this website, it didn't take long to recognize the value of the "Ask The Instructor" section of which I read through every question and response, taking notes, trying different perspectives, bookmarking suggested sites, and elevated my game by leaps in big hurry. Some of the conversations about psychology concerning conscious vs. subconscious were most revealing. As for your Christmas present might I suggest a 2009 book about learning in most basic form, and how to establish new approaches to understanding practice, motivation, and coaching skills. "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle is very insightful.

Interesting, I'm going to have to check this one out. Thanks!

If you're working on the instructional aspects of your library, I would highly recommend Phil Capelle's "Play Your Best Pool" as the single most comprehensive instructional book available (IMHO). I would also recommend, if you're a 'B' player or better, Bob Henning's "The Pro Book" as ABSOLUTELY essential for anyone looking to take his/her game to the next level. You cannot go wrong with either of these selections!

''The Lions and The Lambs''....by Thomas Frensch.......!!

I didn't put that on the list because it's expensive when and if you can find it.
Also, Billiards, Hustlers and Heroes, Legends and Lies, and the Search for Higher Truth on the Green Felt by John Grissim. The last time I saw this on Ebay it was $275.00.
