What books on Billiards would you buy?

Another vote for Capelle here. I just got back into the game and got 9 ball. It is awesome! I plan to add practicing and the straight pool very soon.

If anyone has the 14.1 that they would like to donate to a good cause, I would be the good cause.

I've read everything mentioned here but have not yet seen Dr. Daves new DVD's. I intend to do so when the series is complete.

I recommend everything mentionded as being helpful and would add Jack Kohelers books to the mix. I can't remember the titles off the top of my head but a google of his name will bring them up. The Science of Pocket Billiards? Is that right?? It's been a few years. Sorry for the bad memory... I just remember that his books were very helpful in the beginning of my studies.

Blackjack also has some good stuff that can be downloaded.

Thanks for all the help guys/gals.

I ended up buying to start: The 8-ball Bible, Play your best 8-ball, Practicing Pool, The illustrated Principles of Billiards.

I think that should give me a good balance to start and I plan to add more books when I finish reading through those. I would have gotten the "99 Critical shots by Ray Martin" and "Play your best Pool" along with the one I did get but the first was sold out and the second was the 1995 print and not the 2005 revised print.

The one. The only. 'Winning One Pocket' by Eddie Robin.
I'm in the market for a copy, by-the-way.

Just acquired a copy of 'Winning One Pocket' and also a copy of "Shots, Moves, and Strategies'. I'm good to go.

I say skip the books - old technology. The best instructional for progressing beyond fundamentals is Dr. Dave's and Tom Ross's Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots. Dr. Dave tells you what's about to be shown and then Tom Ross shows it. No wasted time on the DVDs, and a large body of knowledge is crammed in there. You will be hitting pause a lot because it goes by pretty fast.

I've only seen the first two DVD's of the five that will ultimately be produced, but they are by far the best pool instructional of any kind that I've ever seen or read. I trust that the last three volumes will be likewise. Dr. Dave and Tom have really produced a superb product.
Thanks Rich. Positive feedback like this really helps motivate me to keep working hard on the last two discs. Disc III is shipping out on Wednesday; and I've been working really hard on Disc IV, which covers kick and bank stuff. It is the toughest one so far, but I am happy with how it is turning out.

I'll make sure Tom also sees your flattering post.

Thanks again,
Dave

Dave,

Your videos and your website are amazing! I frequent it often. I hope you keep at it and keep providing great info for all of us to view and learn.

I do disagree with Rich about books being dated. It's a proven fact that some people have better retention for information depending on the medium in which it is provided to them. Some people can't retain a thing they read but show it to them in a video and they get it instantly, other people can see the same thing over and over again but still never get it until they read it for themselves. I personally like a mixture of both, I love to read and have hard source material to look through and I also love to be able to jump on the web and search for a video of something specific I want to see done. It's the best of both worlds!

What this man said..

This kthxgg

As above....99 Critical shots and Pleasures of Small motions. For DVDs: Dr_Dave 5 dvd set and most importantly Mika Immonen's Mastering Pool 3 dvd set. from Intrinsic Media.
