In the 14.1 section there is a post that Buddy Hall called Lassiter the best 9 ball player he had ever seen. Assuming this is true and probably said some time ago, I wonder if Buddy would say the same thing in 2012?

I have no doubts that he would indeed say the exact same thing.
Wimpy is considered by many to be the best 9 ball player ever...period.
Played pretty good 14.1 and one-pocket too!

Very similar story seems to be swirling around this guy from ND....

I asked Buddy about this myself once.

While he did admit that Mike Sigel was the best player he ever had to deal with on a regular basis, and that Lassiter was "an old man" by the time he (Buddy) got to be well known, that even at Mike's best,Lassiter was "at least a ball better on a daily basis". Tommy D.

Well, Measureman,
I just got off of the phone with Buddy Hall and the answer to your question about Buddy saying that Lassiter was the best 9 ball player he had ever seen is, yes!! Buddy just told me that he says the same thing right now in 2012!! He was playing One Pocket for $300.00 a game and still answered the phone to talk to me!! That is a real friend! Nice post, Measureman.
Many Regards,

Hmm... would he be called the "North Dakota Kid"?

-Sean <-- didn't know SVB had relatives "up north"... :p

Isn't it nit picking after a certain point? I mean once you start talking about the upper upper echelon (Buddy, Earl, Sigel, etc.) it would just be determined by who is having the better day. Right?

Yes. All those guys and many more in that class can beat each other on a given day. But it is the body of work that counts. Mosconi lost a lot of straight pool matches but still won enough to be world champion like 15 years of of 18.

I heard somewhere that Lassiter thought Don Willis was the best

Lock...I'm gonna disagree with you and Buddy.
Buddy doesn't tend to be a braggart and I'll always thought he was
respecting his elders and a great player by saying that about Wimpy.

..now let me give you the rest of the story....
Luther Lassiter said Buddy Hall was the best 9-ball player.

regards
double hemlock..<..who thinks Lassiter and Sigel are contenders for
all-round...but the Pearl is Buddy's closest contender for 9-ball.

if all these guys played each other in there prime for 5 straight years, i would go with efren coming out of that to be considered the best at the end of the 5 years. Some guys may have a better year but over the long run i think efren would be the most consistent winner over that span.

Answer this question? Who beat Efren when he came to the USA? Only one man!!! Buddy Hall!!! Not one game either.... The whole match. And for big bucks!!!

What Wimpy said was, "If I ever had to have someone shoot pool for my life, win or lose, live or die, the man I'd have shoot for me is Don Willis." According to Thomas Fensch in "The Lions and the Lambs" Willis and Lassiter were road partners for 15 years.

My Grandfather was on the road with Wimpy for about 10 years (what a twosome that would be to run into) and he said that Wimpy at Norfolk after the war (early 50s) played the best nineball he ever seen he said from 1950 till the early 70s nobody could win playing 9ball (a few like harold Worst did) in the 50s and 60s there was Wimpy and then everyone else. It was not like it is now with the wide variety of spots in the 50s most people played even or didnt play needless to say Wimpy did not get played often.
