Shawn Armstrong said:Gulyassy doesn't make the Sledgehammer any more. The name belongs to McDermott Cues. I break with a McDermott Sledgehammer. So, technically, Mike makes Gulyassy J/B cues. Sledge is McD.
Actually, Mike's original "Sledgehammer" was the import. He had them made in Asia. He then sought out an American manufacturer, much like Richard with the X-breaker. He hired McDermott (made in the USA) to make the Sledgehammer II for him. Then, there was a legal battle between Mike and McDermott, and McDermott won the right to use the Sledgehammer name. With the exception of a few cues made by Mike originally, if you own the earlier Sledge, THAT cue is the cheap import, not the McDermott. The McD is made in the USA, and it shows.BPG24 said:Who cares? every sledge hammer I have had has been a Gulyassy... and why would anybody want the import version....

If you're doing to be witty in your responses, at least know your facts.
Shawn Armstrong said:There's no "2" attached any more. The Sledgehammer has been made by McDermott for over 3 years now. For longer than half the life of the cue, it's McDermott. The trademark belongs to McDermott. So, you can't actually attach Mike's name to the Sledge, as it doesn't belong to him. If would be like you calling your J&J a BK2. If you're going to mention the name Sledgehammer, it's McDermott. It's a registered trademark that they earned in a court of law.
OK. LISTEN TO ME FOR A SECOND, INSTEAD OF FIGHTING THIS.BPG24 said:So you are telling me that the 2 that I had custom made directly from him are Mcdermotts? That's hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are Mike Gulyassy Sledgehammer's out there... That he made himself in his custom shop, call him and ask him if you don't believe me....
He made many like this to match playing cues... They are custom and they were more expensive

More "Sledgehammers" from Mike Gulyassy were made by an import house in Asia than he made himself. Did he make some customs? Yes. Ask Mike yourself - the number of Asian production cues vs customs were probably 100 to 1. So, chances are, if you own a pre-McDermott Sledgehammer, you own an import.
McDermott was hired by Mike due to quality control problems with the Asian production house. They released a "Sledgehammer II", a joint effort between Mike and McDermott Cues. It was hyped up, newer, better, and American. Mike lost the right to the Sledgehammer name in court. He doesn't own it any more. Are there original Gulyassy Sledgehammers? Yes. Do you have two? Probably. Does the general public? Nope. There are more cheap imports of the Sledgehammer on the market than Mike's originals, and McDermott Sledges are catching up daily. All cues are made to Mike's exact specs. The difference is the McDs won't warp, and are covered by lifetime warranties. Look at Mike's website some time. Look for the name Sledgehammer. It's no longer there.

The patent has actually been awarded to the tip/ferrule combo. Mike wasn't the first to come up with it. He was the first to apply for a patent. There used to be one piece phenolic ends on some older jump cues.
Sledgehammer is trademarked by McDermott. If you're talking sheer numbers, Mike himself made probably less than 1% of the Sledgehammers on the market. So to call the Sledgehammer a custom cue by Mike is a big of a stretch. It's like calling Meucci's custom cues because Bob makes 10 cues a year. Are you following me? The majority of the Sledgehammers on the market are Asian cues of lesser quality than a Fury J/B. Of the newer ones, such as what Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert used to use, those were McDermotts. If you were to go out and buy a new Sledgehammer TODAY, you'd either get an Asian cue, or a McD. I know which one I'd want.
I'm done with you after this one, BPG24.
Snapshot9 said:didn't you add more brands in the poll, you can go up to 10?
X-Breaker and Varney and J&J should have been added definately.
I have a J&J with 2 shafts, phenolic ferrule/tips, 14mm. It breaks real good.
I have the 4 point Palmwood model, 2419, I believe.
He writes self serving polls. He should put on "Asian knockoff" in it's own category. Mike made probably 300 Sledgehammers himself. McDermott makes that many in a month. But, Sledgehammers are Mike's cues.Snapshot9 said:didn't you add more brands in the poll, you can go up to 10?

BPG24, you make me laugh.
